PEMBROKE (NH) - The FC Exeter U-18 Girls swept to dual regular season and Playoff Finals honors in the Granite State Youth Soccer League's Senior Division One competition in early June. Bouncing back from a narrow 1-0 loss in non-league competition at the Amherst "Memorial Day Classic" Tournament to defending Division One champions Burlington (MA) United, the girls returned to league action the following weekend with a key end-of-season home-and-away series against second-place Raymond Rams, and clinched top GSYSL regular season honors by sweeping the Rams 3-1 at home, and then earning a 2-0 shutout the following afternoon at Cammett Field in Raymond. After allowing an early goal in the opening match, FCX 'keeper Marissa Beggin held the powerful Rams attack scoreless over the final 160+ minutes of the weekend. Stopper Taylor Grijalva scored the first half equalizer in Saturday's match, with Olivia Dimou and team captain Heather MacDougall scoring second half goals that provided the margin of victory. Grijalva, MacDougall, Laura Goodwin and Melissa Murray provided the assists. Defenders Kirsten Goodwin, Roz Jones, Sophie Pickett and Sydney Stella were towers of strength, preventing Raymond from working its usual patient passing game, and keeping the game on the other side of the pitch in 90+ degree heat. In Sunday's return match, Lauren Lacouture scored the eventual match-winner in the first half, and moved back to sweeper in the second half to assist with the shutout. Grijalva scored the insurance goal in the second half, while Dimou and Julia Wilson provided the assists.
In earning Senior Division One regular season honors with a 7-1-0 record, the FCX girls earned a "bye" directly into the Playoff Finals the following weekend, where they would meet an Upper Valley Lightning squad which had accounted for FC Exeter's only regular season defeat, on the road in late April at Norwich VT, before turning the tables on UVL in the return home match in May. MacDougall would open the scoring early in the first half, but the Lightning would equalize quickly, and had a chance at the 12 minute mark to go ahead from the penalty spot, but 'keeper Beggin read the shot correctly and had the post covered, ensuring the shot veered off the mark. That would prove to be the turning point, as FCX midfielder Molly Ryan would net the go-ahead goal from the left wing midway through the first half, and a dominant second half performance highlighted by goals from Maddie Lodico and a second from Ryan wrapped up a decisive 4-1 victory. Grijalva would add a pair of assists, and Aimee Hartwell and Aly Fisher also got on the scoresheet with an assist apiece. Taylor Orlando and Erin Hartwell provided strong two-way play in their midfield assignments, helping to neutralize UVL's dangerous attacking wings and cutting off attacking service to the UVL strikers. The girls' victory in the Senior Division One Playoff Finals marked the first time an EYSA-based team has ever won top playoff honors at the GSYSL's highest level of competition.
"The girls have achieved so much in their time together" said Coach Chuck Murray. "The core players have been together for almost seven seasons now, and they just keep finding a way to rise to new challenges together. One of those challenges has been with all the other commitments they have, whether it's academics, school sports, jobs ... it comes at you quickly at this age, and we've also experienced some player turnover the last few years. Injuries have hit us pretty hard this year, too. But the girls have taken it all on, added some new players, shifted some assignments, and kept up to their usual high standards. Their focus and determination is just amazing. It's my job to keep them challenged, and we've always tried to keep them at least a year ahead of the competitive curve. The last two Springs they advanced to President's Cup Regionals, and that was quite an achievement. This season, we aged out of that competition, so we've focused on the league, and a pair of New England tournaments instead. They just love playing together. It might be coming to an end for some players soon, with college and all, but I think they know this has been a pretty special experience they've been able to share with their teammates."
The FC Exeter Girls will be completing their 2013 Spring season next weekend (June 22nd-23rd) at the prestigious Essex United tournament in Essex Junction VT.Back to top | by
