DJST provides opportunities for children ages 8-15 to learn the joys of sailing in a supportive group setting. We focus on responsibility, learning and teamwork in addition to sailing fundamentals and racing technique. Participants will utilize DJST's fleet of training boats, including Optimists and Club 420's. First-time sailors are always welcome!
The mission of the Darien Junior Sailing Program is to provide a safe, fun and empowering learning environment in which to develop the skills required for sailing; to promote personal growth and independence within the sport, to achieve proficient levels in boat handling and maintenance, and to develop decision making skills, while encouraging sportsmanship, leadership and team work in rigging, launching, and sailing together on the Long Island Sound.
2019 Registration opens February 11!
DJST provides all Darien families the opportunity to try the sport of sailing without the hassle and expense of owning your own boat! We have a fleet of 28 Optimists available for all participants to rent, for a nominal fee, so you can enjoy the experience without the full investment!
Over forty years of operation at Weed Beach have seen the program explode in popularity. We have had tremendous success cultivating loyalty to our program with hundreds of returning sailors, and many rotating through to instructor level. We are proud of our long term family associations and of the efforts of all the volunteers who have kept us going. This season is poised to continue that excitement, and we look forward to meeting new faces, new volunteers and new sailors!
DJST offers programs from novice to advanced level junior sailors at Weed Beach, including instruction in Optimist sailboats for sailors 8-15 years of age, and introduction to Club 420s as well as Club 420 Racing for those interested in high school sailing.
In addition to leisure sailing, DJST has incorporated intermediate and advanced racing techniques and strategies into the afternoon programs in preparation for our traditional friendly scrimmages with other local clubs. Our experienced instructors will engage local yacht clubs these scrimmages during the season in preparation for JSA sanctioned regattas on Long Island Sound.
