EYH Announces 2017-18 8U Coordinator

Everett Youth Hockey is pleased to welcome back coach Taylor Ostrander. Taylor will be working with the 8U coaches and players in 2017-18 as the organization’s 8U coordinator.

Taylor was a valued on ice contributor this past season working with the association’s 8U Mitey  Mites. He will continue to help all 8U Mite coaches with on ice practices, plans and player development for 2017-18.

Lifelong Player and Now, Parent Coach

Taylor has been playing hockey for 28 years with amateur hockey participation at the rec beginner level to Midget AA in his final year. He has continued to play the game in Men's Leagues ever since completing his minor hockey participation.

Taylor spent his first five (5) years of coaching at the Midget C level for SKAHA. After a 5 year break establishing a family he got back into the coaching level at the beginner age group with his son. Taylor will be entering his third year in the Everett program.

Taylor’s philosophy for this age group and any age group is to have FUN!

“I also understand and embrace fully that failure leads to success. I encourage every one of my players to push themselves to their limits so that they can learn and adapt from their experiences. Sometimes they will fall and that can be frustrating, but when they get back up and successfully accomplish the task they were unable to do previously the feeling of success will be empowering!”

Goals for the Season

In particular when working with the 8U program Taylor understands that these players are the future of Everett's youth hockey success. His goal for them this year is to continue to build and/or form their hockey foundation. This age group is critical in establishing the fundamentals needed to play the game of hockey. The group focus on will be upon improving skating, stick handling, passing, shooting, 1v1 development and teamwork.

USA Hockey Training

Taylor is a USA Hockey Level 3 certified coach who has remained current on Safe-sport and the necessary 8U programs. His plan is to be level 4 certified next year.

What does the Mite Coordinator Do?

Mite Coordinator does the following:

  • Lead the Coaching Selection Committee in the selection of coaches.

  • Oversee training and evaluation of EYH coaches.

  • Help to resolve coach/player and coach/parent issues.

  • Lead the effort with assistance from coaches to develop a consistent practice plan and specific teaching and practice curriculum.

  • Advise player tryout process and player selection.

  • Obtain feedback at the end of the season from each player’s parents regarding the performance of each team’s coaching staff.

  • Assist the coaches in requests, and be a liaison between coaches and parents.

What is the difference between Mites and Mitey Mites?

Mite v. Mitey Mite – the difference between the two:

Mites:  This program is designed for kids with one-to-two years of Mighty Mite or Advanced Beginners experience.  The focus at this level is to help skaters develop the skills they need to be successful players when they move to the Squirt level. Mites play league games for the MHL (Metropolitan Hockey League). There may be tournaments and/or jamborees they may attend during the hockey season. Mites practice approximately twice per week, with one game on the weekend (usually).

Mighty Mites:  The program is designed for kids who are pre-K and kindergartners, as well as kids as old as eight who are new to hockey.  The primary focus of this group is to learn to skate or improve upon skating skills, learn the basics of hockey through drills and fun games, and gradually progress towards short scrimmages with teammates.  There are no games against other outside teams at this level.  Kids are broken into groups/teams by age and/or experience level and practice weekly.

We are excited to grow this program and encourage graduating beginners players to register for

the 8U program here:

8U Mitey Mites:

8U Mites:

There are also various camps in the summer that 8U players can attend:

8U Beginners Session B:

8U Silvertips Day Camp July 31 - Aug 4:

On Ice Evaluations for Mites and Mitey Mites will begin in September.

8U teams typically play cross ice games vs other 8U teams.

14U A1 Coaches and Tryout

The Everett Jr Silvertips are pleased to announce the details of their 2017-18 14U A1 program.

This includes the appointment of Kacey Walker as 14U A1 Jr. Silvertips Head Coach and returning 14U co-coach Jason Kwiatkowski.

Kacey had a successful first season in Everett in 2016-17, taking on midway the Head Coaching position of the 12U rep team that finished first in the MHL B loop.  Kacey was born and raised in Marysville, Washington and has been involved with the game of hockey for 15 years.  He spent the majority of those years playing hockey in Seattle until the age of 17 where he joined the Seattle Totems of the WSHL.  After two years with the Totems he went on to play for the Bellingham Blazers of the NPHL and then with the San Diego Gulls of the WSHL.

Jason Kwiatkowski is a WHL alumni having played major junior hockey for the Prince Albert Raiders and Tacoma Rockets over three seasons. He also played for the Fresno Falcons of the WCHL a minor professional hockey team. Jason lead an upstart 14U A1 program in 2016-17 that was amongst two of the first Everett teams to play in the Pacific Coast Amatateur Hockey Association. What began as a team with only a handful of returning players, Jason provided opportunity to overlooked and younger players helping them make the jump to an A1 program.

In addition to Kacey and Jason, the program will have oversight by 16U AAA Head Coach Turner Stevenson to provide greater consistency and continuity between the 14U A1 team and the NAPHL 16U AAA program.

This provides players with the opportunity to participate in a development program offering the most full ice practices in the Seattle area, world class dryland training three days a week at Engineered Sports all under the guidance of coaches with Junior and professional hockey experience.

This team will play in the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association “A” league as well as other tournaments to be determined.

We believe we have several of the best 2004 players in the state including two who have already competed for a season at the 14U Bantam level. This gives the team a foundation to build upon including a number of returning 2003 born players. There are opportunities however at all positions for both 2004 and 2003 born players wishing to play at the highest level of rep in the Pacific Northwest.

As a development program leading to the 16U AAA program, this is a unique opportunity for both 2004 and 2003 born players perhaps otherwise overlooked in the Seattle area to train at an elite level.

Tryouts for the 14U A1 team are in June as follows:

14U A1 Tryouts

16U A1 (2000-02) / 18U A (1999-01)

Session # 1:

Turner Stevenson Named NAPHL 16U Coach of the Year

EVERETT, Wash. – The Everett Silvertips, in conjunction with the North American Prospects Hockey League, announced today that Turner Stevenson of the Jr. Silvertips (16UAAA) has been named NAPHL 16U Coach of the Year for the 2016-17 season.

Stevenson, completing his first season as 16U head coach of the Jr. Silvertips, led the program to a turnaround record of 17-4-1 in the regular season after it registered two points the season prior. The Jr. Silvertips boasted a seven-game win streak under Stevenson’s guidance, along with a pair of forwards, Dawson Butt (Everett Silvertips) and Hunter Campbell (Calgary Hitmen) who finished as the club’s top two scorers after being selected in the WHL Bantam Draft.

“Turner brings a tireless work ethic, tremendous core values, and a natural ability to lead which makes us extremely proud for his well deserving honor,” said Jr. Silvertips general manager Scott Brihn. “From the moment he came aboard, we believed it was only a short matter of time before his influence would produce tremendous results. The Silvertips family congratulates Turner on his award.”

Everett reached the regional finals of NAPHL playoff action and the Jr. Silvertips announced expansion to the 18U level, who will also be coached by Stevenson, in the NAPHL.

Stevenson was named Head Coach of the Jr. Silvertips 16U AAA club on Apr. 15, 2016. The native of Prince George, B.C. suited up in 644 career games across 13 seasons as a forward in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, and Philadelphia Flyers with 190 points (75g-115a) and 969 penalty minutes. He hoisted the Stanley Cup as a member of New Jersey in 2002-03, skating in 23 postseason games with four points (1g-3a).

For his career in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he suited up in 67 games to go with 18 points (6g-12a). The coaches he has skated for in his NHL career include Pat Burns, Larry Robinson, and Alain Vigneault.

Stevenson, a resident of the Seattle area, suited up in 246 career games over four seasons (1988-1992) in the Western Hockey League with the Seattle Thunderbirds, registering 203 points (100g-103a) and 846 penalty minutes. He was named WHL (West) First Team All-Star and Canadian Hockey League Second Team All-Star in 1991-92 when he had 52 points (20g-32a) and 304 penalty minutes in 58 games with the Thunderbirds, host of the Memorial Cup that season.

10U A1 Captures 11th Annual Canuck place Tournament Championship

The Everett Jr. Silvertips 10U A1 team won the VMHA 11th Annual Canuck Place Charity Tournament in dramatic fashion. The 10U Jr. Tips pushed their Langley A3 rivals (who finished the round robin with a perfect 4-0 record) to the brink, with a game tying regulation goal and a 4 on 4 Overtime victory.

In their first game of the tournament the 10U Jr Tips won 4 to 1 over Sno-King Grassi (Tyson Olds with the hat trick).

In their second game they dominated Coquitlam A4 8 to 1 (Nolan Comeau with the hat trick).

Game 3 was a 8 to 3 win over Seafair A4. (Dani Karinen with a couple of goals)

The second game of the third day the 10U team lost to Vancouver A2 4 to 3 but still accumulated enough points in the 3 way tie for first place to play in the championship game.

The championship game featured Langley A3, a flight 2 Atom/Squirt A team PCAHA team who won their bracket with a perfect 4 and 0 record with 37 goals for and 6 goals against.

In the Championship game it was a heated battle with the score see-sawing back and forth.  Coming to the end of the game in regulation time the Jr. Silvertips were behind 3 to 2.  After the Jr Tips took a timeout with 2 minutes and 46 seconds left as a result of the go ahead goal by the Eagles they went on the attack. Goalie Samuel Pollard shut the door and Braeden Derouen scored the tying goal with 6 seconds left in the game.

The Championship was to be decided in 4 on 4 O.T.  On the 4th line change Evan Eiseman wheeled around his net took the puck end-to-end and finished it with a backhand over the out-stretched pad of the sprawling Langley keeper for the Championship win.

Congratulations to the coaches and players on their successful tournament win.
