Sisters at Heart Celebration!

Sisters at Heart Celebration will be continued in 2019. This year many of the Sister's teams will be racing in Florence, Italy during the month of July. We welcome Sister's teams to come paddle in our Community Races on Sunday, August, 5, 2018, and we will create special racing heats for the Sister's teams.

This year Dragonheart Vermont will not be hosting the Sisters at Heart Day – our two breast cancer teams “Sisters” and “Soul Sisters” will be proudly representing the Burlington community and the State of Vermont at the “International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission (IBCPC) gathering in Florence, Italy from July 3rd – July 8th, 2018. Many of the other local Sisters teams from around the USA and Canada will be traveling at that time to compete as well. The IBCPC is “an international organization whose mandate is to encourage the establishment of breast cancer dragon boat teams, within the framework of participation and inclusiveness.”  This event, created as a “post-operative rehabilitation” was last held in Sarasota, FLA. during 2014.  Sarasota saw a 101 breast cancer teams with 3000 participants converge on their city.  This year Florence is expected to have 129 breast cancer teams from 17 countries (representation will be from all continents) with 4000 – 5000 folks in attendance. Paddlers are mainly women ranging in age from 20 to 80.

Our Flower Ceremony will be at noon time on August 5, 2018!!

Dragonheart has planned a memorable weekend for you and your team. Saturday is a special day of workshops, racing, food, camaraderie, and fun just for breast cancer survivor (BCS) dragon boat teams like yours. Our focus is on celebrating our sisterhood. It’s all about paddling together and laughing together. After the morning workshops we'll serve up a delicious catered lunch and some great entertainment. We'll have 500-meter races on Saturday and at 200-meter races on Sunday. Each team is guaranteed two 500-meter races and at least two 200-meter races. There will be medals and trophies (and ERDBA points for qualified teams) for first and second place wins in both events.

We are searching now to schedule our 2019 community sponsored workshop!!

The Sisters at Heart Celebration highlights on Saturday usually are:

  • Improve your paddling skills with an on-the-water Paddling Workshop led by Montreal's 22-Dragons' coaching staff.
  • A planned  drumming, paddling, or dance workshop.
  • Delight in a delicious lunch under the tent with your Sisters at Heart.
  • Sing out your team song or cheer to show your spirit.
  • Vie for the Sisters at Heart 500m Champ Cup.
  • Treat yourself at our Ben & Jerry’s ice cream social.

Saturday’s festivities are just the start! On Sunday, August 42019 all of our Sisters at Heart teams will be honored guests at the Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival, joining 64 community teams for a full day of racing, entertainment, and fun. Breast Cancer teams will compete in a BCS division and race for the Sisters at Heart 200m Champ Cup and participate in a memorable flower ceremony.

All paddlers will receive a Festival T-shirt, hat, and a participatory medal! The cost is just $1785 US per team (up to 20 paddlers plus 1 drummer) for the entire weekend! Additional participants and a steersperson can be added for $85 US per person. Friends can join us for the catered lunch and Ben and Jerry's ice cream on Saturday for $20 US per person. The entry fee is non-refundable should the crew decide to withdraw from the race or should the race be canceled for reasons beyond the Event Organizer's control. To qualify for trophies and race medals as well as ERDBA points, your team must be breast cancer survivors from stem to stern.  If your crew is comprised of BCS paddlers plus non-BCS supporters, your crew is still welcome to participate.
