Concord/Carlisle Boys Travel Basketball Program
This information is for players who played in the Concord/Carlisle travel basketball program last season and for anyone else interested in playing in 2012-2013. The travel program has one Commitment and one Foundation team for each grade 5-8. The program will be largely the same as last year in that each team will play in two leagues and have two practices per week. This year we intend to remain in the Middlesex league (Saturday league) but are considering other leagues for our Sunday league. The other leagues have multiple divisions per grade, so individually placing our teams in the appropriate division based on skill is very manageable. Additionally, the Commitment and Foundation teams will play in at least two tournaments.
We wanted to get this information out early so that all parents of interested players would have an opportunity to evaluate the travel program to determine if it is right for their son.
This team is for players who demonstrate the strongest basketball skills and aptitude and can dedicate the time to consistently make practices and games over a schedule that runs mid-November through mid-March. The 5th grade team will play approximately 20 regular season games plus two tournaments and the 6th-8th will play approximately 30 regular season games plus two tournaments.
Roster: 10 players
Practice: 2 times per week
Games: 2 games per week, a couple of weeks, 3 games (all games are on the weekend, equally on Saturday and Sunday)

Player Time Commitment
As a guideline, if a player will miss more than 10% of the games, and consistently will miss practice due to vacations and other scheduled events, then the Town recreation program may be a better option. Commitment and Foundation players are expected to view basketball as their primary winter sport.
Like last year, Coach Cohen will offer a Fall clinic. The clinic will be held at CCHS on Wednesday nights 9/12/12, 9/19/12, 9/26/12, 10/3/12 and 10/10/12. The clinic for 4th, 5th and 6th grade will be from 6:00-7:30 and 7th and 8th grade from 7:30-9:00. Cost: $100. You will find the clinic information and registration form in the Recreation Program book that will be sent to all Concord and Carlisle residents in the next couple of weeks. Once you receive it, you can register by mailing in the registration form with payment or call the recreation department at 978-369-6460. (Note: The Fall Rec program book will indicate the clinic is for 6 sessions for a cost of $120. The Rec department has been informed of the change to 5 sessions and a cost of $100.)
We strongly encourage participation in this clinic for all players interested in the Travel program as well as the Town recreation program. We emphasize that participation is not mandatory but it is a great opportunity for players to work on their skills in preparation for the travel program try-outs and the season.
The tryouts will take place on Wednesday, 10/17/12 and Wednesday 10/24/12. You are encouraged to attend both days but must attend at least one of those days. Like last year, we will have independent coaches and the parent coaches evaluating the players. Upon registering for a try-out, players will be asked to indicate whether they are trying out for the Commitment or only want to be considered for the Foundation team. Registration information will be provided in September.
Fall Program: There are a few options being explored for a Fall Program, which could vary depending on player interest and may vary by age group. Specifically, we are looking at establishing teams to compete in the Waltham Fall league and/or a conditioning program. More details will follow. Please note that players that are asked to participate on a Fall team are not guaranteed a roster spot on either the Commitment or Foundation team.
The school grade that a player will be in the Fall of 2012 determines the team (e.g., 5th grade in the Fall, 5th grade team). The program is not based on age, grade only.
The Commitment and Foundation teams will have a head coach and up to two assistant coaches/managers.
Commitment team: $425.00, includes gym time, referees, two tournaments (additional tournaments will be at a modest additional cost) and personalized shooting shirt (warm-up) and uniform for new players or as a needed replacement.
Foundation team: $300.00, includes gym time, referees, two tournaments (additional tournaments will be at a modest additional cost), personalized shooting shirt (warm-up) and uniform for new players or as a needed replacement.
**Please note, the cost for the Commitment and Foundation team is for the regular season (November –March) and DOES NOT include the Fall clinics, Fall program and equipment.
Equipment (not included in the program cost)
Basketball shoes, mouth guard (highly recommended) and regulation basketball (optional) (Full size 29.5 inch; 5th grade only-28.5 inch). In September, Brines Sporting Goods will offer a 10% discount on basketball apparel, including basketball shoes, mouth guard, water bottle and basketball, as well as other basketball apparel such as shorts and socks.
