  IYHA Meeting Minutes September 2005 

 

From the President—September 2005

 

            I could fill pages with IYHA news and happenings this month.  This is a busy time of year.  What excites me is the enthusiasm that I see at the different organizing events that are occurring each week.  The parades were wonderful.  The turnout of players to skate along and hand out candy and fliers was fantastic.  And the "Puck".  Have you seen the "Puck"?  Barry Rog built a seven foot wide plywood puck to go over Brian Johnson's go-cart.  It was a big hit in the last two parades.  Thanks Brian and Barry.  (Free plug:  Have your cabinets built in New Brighton by Barry Rog.)  The Registration's have been great.  Now I'm seeing the process from a whole new angle.  Pat O'Connor improves the process each year.  I'm sure many of you saw the Irondale Girls players at your Back-To-School-Night at the elementary schools.  They looked impressive at Pinewood school.  A job well done by the girls program.  I wish that I could list every name of every player that helped at those events and the parades.  Thank You!

                        Saturday, October 1 - first ice time for the Initiation Program

           

            More things that will be happening later in the month and into October include a "IYHA Night" at Letterman's Sports and a IYHA information meeting at the new Schwan's Center to find out more about the plans for expansion at the SuperRink and the fate of Columbia Arena.  You will get special notices about both of these events.  Try-outs for the Girls and Boys traveling teams will happen in October.  Complete schedules for warm-ups and try-outs are available at Registration on the 10th.

            Other good news for our players includes goalie training and free equipment.  Brad Nowak will offer instruction to all of our goalies at special sessions this season beginning on September 17th.  This will be a positive step for IYHA, but each team’s coaches will need to devote more attention to goalie development as well.  The free equipment program headed by Brian Johnson includes substantial new and used equipment for our youngest new players.  Hopefully this will help families get their son or daughter started in youth hockey and maybe develop a star that wouldn't have otherwise even tried the sport.  This equipment will be distributed to those who need it by Brian through the Initiation Program.

            Look through the names of the Board Members in this newsletter.  They have all been especially busy lately.  They are the movers and shakers of IYHA.  I'm not a mover and shaker yet.  A special thanks to Jeanne, Niki and Brian for all they do.

Hi to all,

Summer parades:  IYHA had a great time rollerblading in the parades.  Thanks to all the IYHA players that bladed and handed out candy!  Special thanks to Mike Zosel and his family (printed and distributed about 350 informational handouts for VillageFest), Jim Cich and his family (provided transportation for the VillageFest and Stockyard parades), Tom Welty and his family (provided transportation and water cooler for Festival in the Park) and to Randy Bortot (procured a new parade banner and brought the jerseys).  Also, thanks to all the parents and friends who helped out.  All your efforts are appreciated and made for a fun time.

 

Did you happen to see the large Irondale hockey puck leading our entry in Stockyard Days and Festival in the Park?   This puck measured 7 feet in diameter and was made by Barry Rog, Jackie Rog, Amanda Rog, Mike Honkanen and Bridget Honkanen.  Thanks for all your hard work on this neat parade float!

 

Parade Trivia:  43 bags of candy distributed.  1100 info flyers handed out (350 at VillageFest and 750 at Stockyard Days).  

 

Equipment Loan Program:  IYHA was fortunate to be selected by the Minnesota Wild 10,000 Rinks Foundation for 10 sets of starter gear.  IYHA families are continuing to donate used/out-grown gear.  Keep the donations coming!  We hope to get this equipment to deserving 1st year skaters.  The goal is to recruit more players and keep our costs lower! 

 

SuperRink Spectacular Tournament:  IYHA and Mounds View YHA co-host this tournament every year.  The revenues generated from this tournament keep us from doing a lot of fundraising.  The SRS tournament is played on Thanksgiving weekend and also in January.  The 2nd planning meeting was held on 30-August.  This is a large tournament and we need volunteers to help with certain tasks.  Please consider volunteering so we can make this great tournament even better this year.  Contact me or Sue Kranz if you are interested in help with the tradeshow/vendors/raffle.  Other volunteers are needed too!  Bring your creative ideas!

 

Fundraisers.  IYHA has a couple of fundraising opportunities.  Anyone want to explore and see if they may work for us?

From Tom Welty, the District Representative:

 

The folks at TC District, as you can imagine, have been busy planning the upcoming season. Scheduling meetings, coaches meetings, Presidents meetings, CEP training, etc. are all in the works in preparation of another fine season. But most of the recent district meetings have once again been dominated by discussions of potential plans by Minnesota Hockey to eliminate TC District. (Or, the “repurposing” of TC District as I like to call it). (Hey, someone in our school district went to all the trouble of making up a new word, the least we can do is keep using it). The latest information is this: Minnesota Hockey formed a committee made up of district directors and gave them the task of looking at re-districting. When Minnesota Hockey holds their fall meetings September 16-18 (At the Holiday Inn – Select, Brooklyn Park, in case anyone want to go yell) there is a good chance that this committee will recommend and the full board will vote on a redistricting plan that eliminates TC District and spreads out the former TC District associations in new districts.  Irondale would return to a slightly modified District 2. The change would take place beginning with the 2006-07 season. As you can imagine, there is opposition to this plan, mostly from folks within TC District who contend that eliminating TC District will ultimately kill inner-city hockey and that the solution is a strengthened TC District that includes all inner-city associations as well as smaller first and second tier associations (like us). Informed observers within TC District tell me that there is a 50/50 chance that it will happen. Informed observers outside TC District say the chance are greater than that.  We should know after the Sept. 16-18 meeting. From Mark Mohar, Boys Program Coordinator:

IYHA tryouts are conducted under the direction of the Boy’s Coordinator with assistance from the ACE Coordinator.  Independent evaluators (who have no players currently trying out at any Boy’s Traveling level) are selected to observe and evaluate all skaters at the Traveling levels.  The on-ice tryout coach has no bearing on team selection or evaluation. 

 

Team selection is based on performance in two areas: drills and scrimmage.

Drills are provided by the on-ice tryout coach and are designed to measure and exhibit speed and quickness, balance, stickhandling, passing, and shooting skills as well as hustle.  

Scrimmages will be comprised of 3 on 3, 4 on 4, and 5 on 5 situations. Scrimmage evaluations are subjective and will take into consideration all of the above skills as well as game sense, ice vision, defensive skills, aggressiveness, team play ability, and playmaking. 

Goalies will be evaluated ongoing by the selected evaluators in areas of quickness, agility, positioning, hustle, proper technical movements, and reaction. 

 

Attendance at all sessions is required.  In extenuating circumstances a tryout may be missed.  The impact of that will be subject to review by the Boy's Program Coordinator, ACE Coordinator, and evaluators.

 

The number of players on each team will be based on the overall registration numbers for that particular level.  Our goal is a minimum of 12 skaters per team and a maximum of 15.   

 

Once the tryouts are completed, results will be compiled and initial team placement will take place.  This will consist of approximately 80% of the team placed solely on raw rankings.  The remainder of the roster will be determined based on input/discussion between the head coach, evaluators, tryout coordinator, and ACE coordinator.  For example for a team of 14 skaters 80% represents 11 players.  Eleven players will be placed and discussion will revolve around the remaining 3 to be named.  This discussion will consist of specific team needs and who best can fill those needs.  This last step is to avoid a team having a glut of any one position and a dearth in others as well as an overabundance of certain skill sets and a deficiency in others.   The eligible players to be added in this manner will only be twice as many as spots to fill.  For example if three spots need to be filled then only the next six in player rankings will be considered.  The head coach will not be involved in discussions unless their child has been placed.

 

Upon completion of these steps players will be notified of team placement.  This season players will be notified Wednesday, October 19th,

Irondale Youth Hockey Association Board Meeting Minutes:

IYHA Board of Directors meeting August 18, 2005.  Note: These minutes have not been approved. They will be reviewed, corrected as needed, and approved at the next regular Board of Directors Meeting.

Meeting called to order by President Jim Cich at 6:33 p.m. in the Mounds View City Hall conference room. Agenda reviewed. Minutes reviewed; motion to approve as presented (RB) (CT), motion carried.

Old Business:

·          ACE Coordinator Description (final review): Jim Cich. Reviewed June 16, 2005 version. Presented for motion to approve. Motion to approve June 16, 2005 version of ACE Coordinator Job Description (NG) (RO); motion carried.

·          Planning: Mark, John and Jim have talked about plan for warm ups and try-outs. Jeff Martin will do warm-ups for boys. John has a time conflicts between boys and girls ice for warm-ups and evaluations—will ask Jeff Martin to pick up extra with the boys. John is planning to have monthly meetings with coaches. Girls program is set for warm ups and evaluations. Working with Cheryl for Imitation. HEP meetings will be in September. Will have 5-6 different development sessions for girls throughout the winter.

·          Board and Specialty Job Descriptions: Motion to add section under Treasurer to include being a member of the Lake Region Hockey board, delete references to D2 in District Representative section (CT) (RB); motion carried.

·          S.K.A.T.E. Program:  Tom Welty. The S.K.A.T.E. (Skaters Keep Achieving Through Education) program information is out for this year. The program started to support skaters in education. There has been an evolution of the requirements for documentation, so it now requires only a verbal acknowledgement of the skater meeting the grade point requirements to qualify for SKATE. This year, the program has been privatized. In order for us to participate it will require us to pay approximately $150 for our traveling skaters to participate. Discussion. Motion to fund $150.00 for the SKATE program (CT) (PO), motion carried. Will use funds from the fund raiser at Culvers or seek sponsorship for these funds. There is a tight deadline, so it was important to vote at this meeting. Will ask for a volunteer to run this program.

·          Board and Specialty Budgets: all budgets have been received. Will pull all of the budgets together and look for gaps and redundancies. Will present at future meeting for vote.

·          Thanksgiving Tournament: Brian Johnson. Will add another C Bracket for the January tournament. Tournament Committee will meet in mid-August. Dean (Mounds View) placed ad in Let’s Play Hockey. Volunteer sign up—Jeanne, Pat, Renae and Niki will pull the volunteers together.

·          Tournaments: Program Coordinators will pull tournaments together for the teams. Will work on 3 for girls and 3-4 for Boys. We still are owed a refund from Cloquet for two teams from last year—they were unable to participate in the tournament, and we will receive that credit from them. Will not book tournaments during the time frame for our Thanksgiving and January Tournaments.

 

New Business: Board Roundtable

President: Jim Cich. Jim will contact Tadd Toumie about the Rink Advisory Task Force. He had agreed to chair this group, and it has not yet met. There is a lot of work going on in the community—Edison, Super Rink, Columbia, Arden Hills, etc.

 

Vice President: Brian Johnson. Festival in the Park Parade is Sunday August 21st at 3:00 p.m., Tom Welty will drive. Stockyard Days—need to give a big thank you to Barry Rog—he made a hockey puck to fit around a go-cart! It was very creative and added a lot to the parades! He has his own cabinet shop in New Brighton. The parade participants distributed 750 flyers about IYHA. Equipment loan: Thank you will go out tomorrow to Minnesota Wild. Please get used equipment in by September 10th (the last registration). Beau Bailey—there is an opportunity to request donations for equipment, will submit this letter tomorrow.

 

Treasurer and Lake Region: Jeanne Falconer. Distributed treasurer’s report. Lake Region—Organization has been turned around. We can turn ice bills in to them with a written request for payment. They can no longer send us money without a specific request. We could request clinics be paid for by Lake Region.

 

Secretary: Niki Gjere. Newsletter deadline is September 1st. Clean up went very well at Stockyard Days—one comment was on Saturday morning when one of the Stockyard days board members was driving up—it appeared as though nothing had occurred on Friday evening—it was so clean! Pictures for teams / individuals will be set for November.

 

Registration Coordinator: Pat O’Connor. Need screening forms for Board Members. Will have sign for used equipment donation at next registration. Data is being inputted at the time of registration. Thank you to everybody for their help.

 

Twin Cities District Representative: Tom Welty. Distributed MN Hockey directory information update. TC District wants to make changes to governing rules. Change rescheduling fee from $50 to $100. Winning teams need to fax score sheet within 3 days. Fair play point language. Associations will be fined $100 per worker if no show—they want names of workers 24 hours before the activity. Schwan’s is offering a fundraising opportunity throughout the state. Distributed “important dates” document.

Redistricting: There have been more discussions about redistricting. TC District is fighting this—concern about this being the death of inner city hockey. Change would be during the 2006-2007 season. See attached for the draft of proposed new districts.

 

Ice Commissioner: Renae Oleson. Giving back ice we do not want. There was a lot of ice given back by one of the Association—will check if we can take some of that. We have plenty of ice.

 

 Initiation Coordinator: Cheryl Mason.  Draft of initiation manual distributed. Steve Kracht will review and give feedback. Cheryl is willing to help other Board members develop their manuals. Can do the Little Chippers at the MN Wild—will get that set up. Setting up talks at the schools to promote youth hockey.

Question asked about younger players playing up. Rules are similar for all boys; we have the numbers and don’t need to do this. In the girls program, however, we do not have full teams, so when we have full teams, will not play up. Girls program is a newer program.

 

Girls Program Coordinator: Chris Tahti. Recruiting is going well. New kids at all levels—we say this at registration. U14—must register with IYHA. Will go through the Twin Cities Co-operative for tryouts. Will have 1 A team and 2 B teams. Pay for warm ups and evaluations at Twin Cities Cooperative.

 

Boys Program Coordinator: Mark Mohar. Holding coaches interviews. Emailed out the schedule. Goalie training—all coordinators can send their goalies to training. We will try to have all the tournaments picked and ready for next meeting.

 

Equipment Manager: Randy Bortot. No new information. Equipment disposal—will take old equipment (goalie) to Play It Again Sports. Some of this equipment is over 15 years old.

 

Additional Reports: ACE Coordinator Update: John Donovan. Already discussed the updates.

Guest: Doug Loahr. Concerns expressed about how many hours we have for warm-ups and evaluations. Will be paying people to be on the ice with the kids. Can we get kids done earlier so the coaches can work with their teams? Discussion. This is an ongoing discussion—some believe not enough evaluation periods, some believe too many. Will see how it goes again this year and will receive feedback from the coaches.
