BVL Announces Second Annual Scholarship Program For HS Seniors

Boulder Valley Lacrosse offers annual scholarship program for high school seniors in memory of Stephen C. Muir

BOULDER, Colo., May 3, 2017--  The Boulder Valley Lacrosse Association (BVL), one of the largest youth lacrosse programs in Colorado, has announced the second annual provision of the Boulder Valley Lacrosse Scholarship in memory of former Boulder resident and lifelong lacrosse player and ambassador, Stephen C. Muir.

The BVL Scholarship was established in 2016 to honor the service, commitment and value that young adults have given to the local lacrosse community. BVL will award at least $1,000 in scholarships that may be used at any accredited institution of learning, including schools with 4-year, 2-year, trade or vocational degree programs.

The winners of the inaugural BVL Scholarships in memory of Stephen Muir were Jessica Alvaro-Glantz and Connor Fox.  Jessica currently plays lacrosse at Western Washington University, while Connor will enroll and play lacrosse at Brown University in the fall.

The scholarships are available to all currently enrolled high school seniors, male or female, who have “given back” to the game of lacrosse in ways that have helped grow the sport or that have enhanced the playing experience for others. Applicants’ contributions to the lacrosse community could be as players, coaches, referees, or through a demonstrated ability to simply bring people together for the love of the sport.

“A primary goal of the BVL Scholarship is to celebrate and honor the character, integrity, and love for the sport of lacrosse that Steve Muir exhibited throughout his life,” said BVL President JP O'Brien.  “In addition to his exceptional skill and dominance as a high school All-American and NCAA Division I national champion, Steve embodied all that is good about competitive sports. He made all of his teammates better by infusing an entire team with a joy of playing the game.  Steve was known for laughing, dancing, and bouncing around on the sidelines, helping remind his teammates of how much fun it is to play lacrosse. We are thrilled to announce these scholarships in his honor.”

The selection committee will review each application with a combination of factors in mind, including merit, leadership and overall impact on the lacrosse community.  All applications must be submitted no later than May 22, 2017.  Scholarship winners will be notified no later than June 1, 2017.

Eligible candidates must complete the online application form here: BVL Scholarship In Memory Of Stephen Muir

A letter of recommendation from a coach, a player, or other lacrosse community member is also required. Letters should be emailed to BVL Executive Director Andrew Davies, at .

Registration is now closed for the 2017 BVL Spring League. We encourage parents to register players for our next program, our annual BVL Boys Summer Lacrosse Day Camp at CU.  You can learn more here:  BVL Registration Page

Beginning players are welcomed and encourage to participate in the BVL Summer Camp-- this is a great way for beginners to begin learning about the rules and fundamental skills of lacrosse in an extremely fun setting on the beautiful CU campus.

After the BVL Summer Camp is held, our next open program will be BVL Fall Ball.  This program runs on six Sundays in September and October.  We will group players by age and relative experience levels, so beginners are again welcomed and encouraged to participate.

In November/December and then in January/February, we will organize BVL Winter Indoor Lacrosse at the Sport Stable in Superior.  Registration for these programs will open in fall 2017.

Spring is the primary season for lacrosse.  Our 2018 Spring League registration will open on January 1st, 2018.  Demand for spring placement is always extremely high, so we strongly recommend that you register early in January to insure a position for your son.

Players of all experience levels are welcome to register for the BVL Spring League.  They will be placed automatically on the appropriate team for their age and experience.

Please consider volunteering with BVL as a coach, to help us meet this demand: COACH FOR BVL

CYLA Age Eligibility Rules

UPDATED for Spring 2017: The CYLA (Colorado Youth Lacrosse Association) will continue to use June 1st as the cutoff date for age-based classification.

The CYLA has permanently adopted US Lacrosse guidelines regarding age-based classification.  Therefore Boulder Valley Lacrosse will group teams on the basis of grade with an age cutoff.

Players in the same grade will generally be grouped together, provided that they meet the June 1 birth date cutoff for that age group.  All players are required to provide official proof of birth date (birth certificate, passport, adoption papers, etc) before participating in sanctioned CYLA games.

We will set up teams at U15, U13, U12, U11, U10, U9, and U8 for the 2017 Spring season.  All current 8th graders are eligible to play, regardless of birthdate.  No high school players are permitted to participate.

A player's eligibility for the 2017 Spring season is determined by his age on May 31, 2016.

  • For example, any player born on or after June 1, 2003 is eligible to play U13.
  • A player born on or before May 31, 2003 is not eligible to play U13 and must play U15.
  • In general, we will group players on the basis of "Grade with an Age Cutoff."  This means that players in the same grade will be grouped on teams at the same age level, provided that they meet the June 1st cutoff date.
  • Players who are "young" for their grade will still be permitted to play at that age level.  For example, a 4th grader who is age-eligible for U9 (ie born after 6/1/2007) can still play U10.

2017 SPRING Age Classifications:

Division Born on or after Grade Equivalency Max Stick Length
  u7#  6/1/2009  1st  37-42"
  u8  6/1/2008  2nd  37-42”
  u9  6/1/2007  3rd  37-42”
  u10  6/1/2006  4th  37-42”
  u11  6/1/2005  5th  37-42”, 47-54”
  u12  6/1/2004  6th  40-42”, 52-72"
  u13  6/1/2003  7th  40-42”, 52-72"
  u15  6/1/2001*  8th  40-42”, 52-72"

 # U7 players must be born before 5/31/2010. U7 players may be grouped with U8 players for Spring 2017 play.

* All current 8th graders are eligible to play for BVL, regardless of birthdate.
9th graders are not eligible to play.
