Happy New Year! I hope you had a joyous and peaceful holiday season. I enjoyed extra time with family, embraced the start of winter and won first place in a holiday party cook off! (Let me know if you need a good recipe for Wild Rice Soup).

As the year begins, I'm reflecting on how to shape GAL's future. Although I have only been on the board a short time, GAL has been part of my life for (gulp) more than 30 years. I started playing with GAL when I was 7 and played every year until I graduated from high school.

My goal is to give the athletes the experiences that I received from GAL, along with the lifelong friendships and the spirit of competition that comes from playing team sports.

My dad, who was my coach nearly every year I played on GAL, died suddenly in 1999. Being on the GAL board is one of the ways I can honor his legacy - volunteering with a community that my dad cherished. When I am at the Optimist fields, I can picture him coaching third base, encouraging the young women to try their hardest, play fair and enjoy the game. Those experiences are a big part of who I am today and it's what I want to give each player that steps onto the field.

I'm also thinking about how the board can improve the league and keep it going. I want to see GAL thrive in the next three years and am dedicated to making that happen. If you have suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Registration for GAL 2019 opens Monday, January 7.

Our next indoor Skills and Drills is January 12 from 11:00 – 1:00 at West Junior High. I hope to see you in the weeks ahead!
