NEW FOR THIS SEASON
JUNIOR VIKING ACADEMY

We are forming the Grand Island Little League Junior Viking Academy (JVA).  The JVA will ‘link’ our three youngest programs (T-ball, Pee Wee, and International League) to form a developmental program with a more consistent and developed focus on the fundamentals of baseball and softball.  The goal of the change is to improve the overall level of instruction received by all players as they are introduced to the sports of baseball and softball, and move up through the Grand Island Little League Program.

In T-Ball and PeeWee, the biggest change will be:

-Each league will have scheduled instructional stations which will provide development of various skills in a small group setting designed around the fundamentals, rules, and basics of the game in addition to regularly scheduled games.

-On the weekend, each team will play a game where coaches will reinforce what is learned during the week, as well as players being able to display what they have learned.

In the International Baseball League, the biggest change will be:

-In order to prepare the player for an easier transition to the Minor and Major programs, the pitching machine will be removed!  This means players will be pitching and catching at this level.  This change will benefit the players by having them practice the positions and roles of a pitcher and catcher in a meaningful way.

-To prepare the children for these roles, each team will have two scheduled pitching/catching clinics during the season.  The players will learn the fundamentals particular to those positions, and to practice and improve their overall development and enjoyment of the game of baseball.

-Coaches will also hold individual team practices, as they have in the past, which will develop player-coach relationships as well as facilitating social interaction between the children.

-Games will be the same as the past with one during the week and one on the weekends.

In the International Softball League, will continue to run just as it has in the 2018 season.

-The changes that were made to this division last season were in the best interest of the players moving up from PeeWee to better prepare them to continue to grow and develop for the older divisions.

-Players will pitch to each batter and the coach will come in to continue to pitch to the batter until that have 5 hittable pitches or place the ball in play. This will benefit the players to begin learning how to pitch as well as having the batter continue to see live pitching to improve their performance, learn and grow. With the coach helping, it will keep the pace of play going for the benefit of all involved in the game.

-Coaches will also hold individual team practices, as they have in the past, which will develop player-coach relationships as well as facilitating social interaction between the children. The goal of this division is for players to develop in a positive, fun and meaningful atmosphere.

-Games will be the same as the past with one during the week and one on the weekends.

**The overall goals of the JVA is to increase confidence, knowledge, skill, and the level of fun that the players are having!  Grand Island Little League is very excited about the changes, and we are looking forward to Grand Island having one of the best baseball and softball programs in WNY!

* Prior to the season, there will be an informational forum at a date and time to be determined, where any questions and concerns will be addressed.

The JVA will be run by the JVA Vice President Mike Kwiatkowski.

Welcome to the Grand Island Little League!

Please read below for important info before you arrive at our park.

1.  Please observe the parking rules at VETS Park and help make the park safer and more enjoyable for all.  When driving through, please keep it under 10 MPH. We have kids crossing the lots and service road all day long. Please be respectful of others as you arrive.

2. There is no smoking or consumption of alcohol while on the grounds.

3. Any abuse of an umpire, whether by a player, coach or fan will be dealt with swiftly and that person will be ejected from the park.

4. Our fields are enclosed. Coaches and players must be inside the dugout during play. Only base coaches are allowed and must be in the coaches box. No on deck batters or players swinging bats outside the fields !  This includes all house, travel and tournament games being played at GILL.

5. Please be aware of the areas where maintenance is replacing the grass. Make sure to avoid those areas and do not allow your children to play there.  Do not climb the fences, or trees. Not only is this a safety issue, we must keep the park well maintained.

6. CLEAN UP THE TRASH!: Please discuss with your teams the importance of cleaning the dugout during and after games. Coaches will be notified if their teams leave a mess.

7. PLEASE BE COURTEOUS WHEN USING THE BATHROOMS AND THROW AWAY ALL PAPER TOWELS.  DO NOT LEAVE SOAP IN SINKS AND BE SURE TO FLUSH THE TOILETS.  GILL IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MAINTENANCE AND DOES NOT WANT TO CLEAN UP AFTER YOU!
