Kansas Cup Recap

LASL United - Kansas Cup 2017 Regionals
Below is a recap of the Kansas Cup Regionals, written by LASL United captain Steve Durkin.  We are proud of the team's accomplishments and look forward to growing a presence in state tournaments like this.
LASL formed an LASL United team for the 2017 Kansas Cup. We started building the team on May 11th with the regional round scheduled for Sunday, May 21st at Baker University. On May 14th it was announced that it would be moved to Sunday, May 28th (Memorial Day weekend), and the location changed to the Sunflower Soccer complex in Topeka. We registered a team of 20 players, and 17 were able to play on the day of the tournament. We didn't hold a practice, but we were pretty familiar with each other with almost all of the players coming from Red Lyon, PV United, and AC Lawrence. The only non-LASL player of the 20 was in town visiting his brother who was one of our players.
Most of the other teams were from the KCKSA league. There were 2 groups of 4 teams. The top 2 teams from each group would advance to the semifinal and would also earn a place in the state round in Wichita on June 18th. We played a great tournament, played exciting football with class, and scored 7 great goals, but we fell short of our goal to advance to Wichita.
The first game was at 8:00 against Eagle's Point. The grass was slick. With several turf fields available in Lawrence some of our players rarely even play on grass, so it took a few minutes to get calibrated but we settled into the game nicely. We were tied 1-1 at halftime having converted a penalty. We took the lead 2-1 with a few minutes left in regulation. In the ensuing minutes we played some of our most exciting football with one of our players denied by the crossbar twice within a minute or two, but we allowed a goal on the final play of a lengthy stoppage time to draw 2-2.
The second game was at 10:30 against Quinto Elemento FC led by John Sosa of the Kansas City Comets and other professional indoor/futsal specialists. They were the strongest team in the tournament. We held them well in the first half, going into halftime at 1-1 and feeling confident as our goal was a strong one and their goal was offsides. They had dominated the play, but when we took the lead 2-1 early in the 2nd half they came alive and became very difficult to contain. They tied the game and added 2 more to finish the game comfortably ahead 4-2 and playing beautifully. Despite losing, it was still a good result for us because they had won their first game by 5 or so goals which gave us an advantage in the goal differential tiebreaker.
The third game was at 1:00 against Deportivo El Parque. They had just defeated Eagle's Point, so the objective was clear that we needed to win in order to advance while a draw would see them advance instead of us. Having just finished their game, they never cooled down. Before we got up to speed they went ahead 1-0 in the first few minutes, but we were again able to settle confidently into the game. With another great attacking spell from our side we tied the game and took the lead 2-1 midway through the half before conceding again on a counter attack from a corner kick at their end. Tied yet again at halftime, we were confident we could win the game, and with about 15 minutes remaining we took the lead 3-2 on a penalty kick that resulted from another strong spell of attacking pressure, but they fought back with a spell of their own and won a free kick which they converted with a player facing away from the goal going prone to redirect the swerving delivery into the net with the back of his head. With the resulting momentum they gained from being back in position to advance, they pressured us further and finished us with an impressive turn and volley off of the post late enough in the game to secure their advancement and our elimination.
Quinto Elemento and Deportivo El Parque ended up facing each other in the final of the state round in Wichita on June 18th with Quinto prevailing to become the first team to win the Kansas Cup 5 years in a row. That makes it clear that we were placed in a difficult group, but we'll still feel that we allowed a great opportunity to slip away in the 3rd game. Most of the same players will reunite with LASL United at the same facility on July 15th and 16th for the Sunflower State Games.
