Changes for the upcoming season

RAYNHAM YOUTH LACROSSE BULLETIN

We wanted to inform everyone of some changes to the RYL program for the Spring 2018 season.  We have left the MBYLL league and partnered up with a newly formed league called the OCLL (Old Colony Lacrosse League). The OCLL is made up of 10 teams in the southeastern MA region including: Raynham, Bridgewater, Quincy, Braintree, Stoughton, Weymouth, Whitman/Hanson, Abington, East Bridgewater, Rockland.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT?

  • This league is structured differently than the MBYLL league - their philosophy is that town teams play equal ability teams.  The size of MBYLL as a whole organization didn’t allow us to choose our region, we were placed in an “area” and assigned towns, regardless of size/skill level, to play against.  This sometimes put us at a disadvantage when playing large towns with 3 or 4 different teams per age level - some being stacked.  We are looking forward to more equal ability games against towns that have similar playing level to our town.

  • At this time OCLL is ONLY scheduling Sunday games.  In years past we had weeknight games, sometimes multiple games a week.  This will be scaled back to Sunday’s only with the occasional weeknight game if deemed by the coach.  Practices are typically 2x per week.

  • Since we are no longer part of MBYLL we are not participating in the Devens Jamboree.  OCLL is working on putting together a jamboree in June - details will be released as they are finalized.

  • This year we are planning to have one team per age level (U11, U13, U15) which is different than past years, and we anticipate this will relieve some of the issues we experienced with scrambling to find players to fill in at games if one team had low attendance.

WHAT WILL BE THE SAME:

  • Our fees will stay the same as last year.  We are no longer required to be a member of MBYLL as part of the season fee so that will simplify registration.

  • As always the mission of our RYL program is to foster the development of the sport and teach the boys how to play to the best of their ability.  We encourage equal playing time for all players on the team regardless of their time spent playing the sport or their prior level of play.  We know many of our boys play lacrosse at a club level, which we are thrilled that our program has helped them get to this level, and using their refined skills they should act as leaders for newer players to help them grow in the sport and encourage them to build on their skills.

  • As our stance has always been - this is a town sport for developmental purposes.  If the boys are interested in playing other sports we encourage them to explore their interests in addition to lacrosse.  There may be conflicts with other sports, games, practices, etc.  We ask that you make games a priority for attendance and highly encourage attendance at all practices but we are not of the mind set that a child should play lacrosse and lacrosse only.

We are excited to enter into this new OCLL league this year and look forward to the changes that it is offering us for the coaches and players.
