SCR All-Stars, Spring and Summer of Tremendous Success!

SCR All-Stars, Spring and Summer of Tremendous Success!

Happy belated 4th of July!  Each May, following the wrap up of our Spring season, SCR participates in the state and regional tournament season, sponsored by Cal Ripken’s National commissioners.  We like to call these teams “all-stars” as we hold tryouts from the machine pitch division all the way up to 12U, for the privilege of representing our league as we play other Cal Ripken tournament teams.  It is a great honor to be selected to an all-star team, and a huge time commitment on our players, families and especially coaches!  We participate in state tournaments and if successful we are invited to the regional tournament to compete against teams from California, Utah, Nevada and even Hawaii!

As any member of our league who has watched our all-star teams practice or play in the last 6 weeks can tell you, the additional practices (3 a week since mid-May), practicing at a more intense level, and game prep through inter-squad scrimmages, really brings our players talents to another level.  The skills that are developed and new friendships built by spending so much time together in such a short time, creates lifelong memories for our players and families!  Playing at a highly competitive level as young as 7 and 8 years old is an adjustment for both our kids and families, however the experience gained transcends baseball and provides lessons for competition beyond the diamond.

This spring and summer has been truly special for SCR.  While winning isn’t the only benchmark for success, the SCR board of directors can’t help but tout the on-field success of our all-star teams.  We fielded 9 all star teams to compete in “state’s” held in Yuma and Phoenix.  Through tournaments played ranging from best of 3 series, to double elimination with as many as 12 teams, SCR was crowned champion in 3 separate age groups!  Our Machine Pitch Blue, 8U Kid Pitch, and 9U Blue teams all won their respective tournaments to carry the championship banner for SCR!  Additionally, our 9U white team finished runners-up, downed in the championship game to none other than our own 9U blue, to qualify for regionals as well!  Four SCR teams qualifed for play outside of our state in one season, a tremendous accomplishment!

In the weeks ahead, our two 9U winning teams will play in Bakersfield, CA in regional competition.  Our 8U black will travel to Price, Utah to also play in regionals.  Had the machine pitch World Series not been such a far traveling venue (Florida) and when our kids are already back in school (early August), our machine pitch blue would have represented SCR at the World Series.

We are very fortunate to have players with such talents at such a young age.  We are additionally fortunate to have coaches so giving of their time and knowledge of baseball to train our young athletes at a high level.  All of our 9 teams excelled and improved throughout the tournament season.  The sportsmanship displayed on and off the field, shaking hands and taking pictures with out of town teams, brought emotions and pride to our board, volunteers and families.  A true success for all-stars on many, many levels!

SCR Baseball Board Level Volunteers Needed

SCR Baseball Families,

Scottsdale Cal Ripken Baseball is a non-profit 501(c)(3) made up exclusively of volunteers. As we head into the holiday weekend, I wanted to reach out to our community and ask if you, or your spouse, would be interested in volunteering in a board level position? Below are examples of roles that we can use help:

  • City and school district liaison
  • Coaches Applications & Background Checks, Cal Ripken Coaches Certification, SUSD (Scottsdale) Coaches Concussion Certs
  • Fundraising and Sponsorships
  • Safety, training, Insurance, and Rules
  • Tball Commissioner; Assistant Commissioners for every division
  • Assistant Equipment Managers (ensures that you get brand new equipment for your team)
  • Website manager

As a board member level volunteer you'll also get free registration for your children! Also, we try to allow board members the first choice in practice fields, priority scheduling, and the first selection of uniforms. Typically, we have one board meeting per month during the season and typical roles require about 5-10 hours of volunteer time per month.

Please feel free to contact me directly to discuss. Thanks!

Jeremy Marks

VP, Scottsdale Cal Ripken Baseball

Mike Matheny Letter - Parents Please Read

Parents / Managers / Asst Coaches,

Please take 5 minutes and read Mike Matheny's letter regarding baseball--it's offers incredible insight regarding youth baseball and is applicable to our league.  At the root of his letter he asks if we, as parents, are setting a good example for our kids -- and the answer might shock you.
