Bantam A at Jay Peak

Please see the below from Coach Kevin Miller, Bantam A:

The Bantam A team returned to the Jay Peak, VT tournament this past weekend and had a ton of fun.  The Wolves first on ice action started with a 6:30AM game on Friday that the team slept walked through for the most part, but were able to salvage a 1-1 tie against a Braintree, MA team with a goal from Luke Roux and a strong performance from goaltender Luke Nordstrom.  After some breakfast and rest, the team regrouped against a stronger Andover, MA team and put a much better effort forward.  The Wolves broke open a 1-1 tie in the 2nd period when the line of Aidan Adams, Ryan Jainchill and Brian Fehl combined for numerous goals leading to a 6-3 victory.  The team followed strict orders on Friday night and Saturday morning to work on their swimming skills in the hotel water park and seemed to have a blast.  They returned to the ice on Saturday night to prevail over a very big and physical Maine team 4-0.  Despite being undefeated in the preliminary round in the 8 team Bantam division, the Wolves lined up to play in the 3rd vs 4th seed consolation game on Sunday against an Acton Boxboro team that had defeated them handily on numerous occasions in past years.  The Wolves put forth their best team effort of the weekend and came back from a 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead into the 3rd period on goals by Aidan Adams and Griffin O’Shaughnessy.  The A-B team took advantage of an odd man rush midway through the 3rd and tied it 2-2, despite being outplayed and outshot throughout the entire game by the Wolves.  Tournament rules dictated a shootout, where it took A-B a 6th shooter to prevail.

The coaches were proud of the improving consistency, sportsmanship, work ethic and attitude of the team and everyone enjoyed a very fun hockey weekend together!

SQUIRT B AVON THANKSGIVING TOURNEY

SQUIRT B TOURNEY CHAMPS

After a slow start to the season with some tough early losses, Squirt B had upped their level of play in the weeks preceding the tournament and the coaches were anticipating a strong holiday weekend performance. After a strong 4-1 win against Millbrook on Friday afternoon at Avon Old Farms to kick off the tournament, the Wolves took to the ice for a 7 am puck drop at Simsbury Farms Saturday against Avon B. Despite the cold, the Wolves offense showed up, garnering a shut out with an 8-0 win. Perhaps feeling a bit overconfident gong in to the afternoon match at Westminster, the Wolves got off to a slow start and frankly got out-skated in the first period by a hungry Simsbury team, who had beaten Avon by only one goal in their morning matchup. The Wolves got out of the period with a 1-0 lead and, after some line resets and fortification of the defense, dominated the rest of the game for the win. A highlight reel moment was Colby Daniak’s first goal of the season, with a bank shot from the goal line off the goalie’s back.

After a strong round-robin performance, the Wolves took to the ice Sunday against Millbrook B for the championship game at Avon Old Farms. Clearly looking to redeem themselves from Saturday’s loss, Millbrook came out firing in the first period. Thanks to the defensive wall led by Jack Croce and Dillon McDermott (who had two goals) and a strong performance in net by Lauren Busi, the Wolves stepped up and dominated the game for a 5-0 shutout, rewriting the script from their championship loss to Millbrook in the 2016 Mite B finals. Clearly, Squirt B hit their stride at the right time in the season and brought home the hardware as proof.

MITE A AVON THANKSGIVING TOURNAMENT

MITE A TOURNEY CHAMPS

Congratulations to our Mite A team for winning the "Mite A division" of the 24th annual ACFYHA Thanksgiving Tournament.
The team started the tournament at 7 am on Friday against Simsbury. They came out skating hard and never looked back with an impressive 9-3 victory. Next, the team played Millbrook and were quickly down 3-0 in the first five minutes of the game. However, the kids showed their resilience and talent by calmly coming back and winning the game 10-7. The final qualifying game was against Avon. Once again, the kids were down early by 3 goals, but won a very competitive and hard fought game 6-5. This set the stage for a finals rematch against the host program of Avon.
The final game was a back and forth battle for the ages. Drew Doering scored the tying goal with 12 minutes left in the game on a beautiful little pass from Emerson Fletcher. Charlie “Bearclaw” Faulkner was tested often and came up with some huge saves in the closing 12 minutes of the game. Jack “Bread Head” Anthony picked up a loose puck along the boards and released one of his infamous “twisted wristers”, scoring the go-ahead goal with 1 minute left.
The Mite A team once again impressed all the coaches and fans with their passing, hustle and grit. The Mite A team has set some high expectations for the season by winning their second tournament of the year. Go Wolves!
