The Magnolia Green Aquatic Association is seeking an assistant coach for the 2018 summer swim team season.  The Magnolia Green Sea Dragons compete in the Chesterfield Aquatic League with 21 other teams.  The swim team is located in the Magnolia Green subdivision.  An assistant coach for the Magnolia Green Sea Dragons will help assist the head swim coach to carry out the vision for the program and assist with practice each day.  An assistant coaching candidate works hard, and is a dedicated individual with a background in competitive swimming. In addition, the assistant coach will take initiative to help assist and support other coaches and to conduct effective practices. Candidates must be able to teach skills to a wide ranging set of skills for swimmers aged 3-4 (Mini Dragon Kickboard racers) and 5-18. All applicants will interview with select swim team board members and the Head Swim Coach prior to being considered as a candidate for hire.


Core duties/responsibilities, preferences & requirements:

·        Knowledge of all four swimming strokes (freestyle, backstroke breaststroke, butterfly) with the ability to pass that knowledge on to swimmers aged 4 through 18.

·        Must be willing to instruct both in and out of the water during practice.

·        Will help set up and break down the pool before and after each practice.

·        Can effectively communicate with swimmers and parents.

·        Can effectively communicate and collaborate with all of the coaches on staff.

·        Ability to listen and follow instructions given by the head coach.

·        Arrives prior to the start of practice to become familiar with practice plan.

·        Shows exemplary character and serves as a role model to young swimmers.

·        Excellent listening and communication skills.

·        Assistant Coach must be able to commit to coach from the middle of May through July.

·        Previous experience with Team Manager, Meet Manager, or Team Unify (Preferred).

·        Must have valid and current CPR certification prior to season starting.  (Required)

·        Valid Lifeguard Certification (Preferred)

·        Two or more seasons of summer league coaching or swim team experience (Preferred)

Tarrington on the James is seeking an experienced, committed and personable Head Coach for our summer swim team program. Our goal is threefold: to provide the best recreational experience for all swimmers in the program, to provide a competitive atmosphere for all swimmers to challenge themselves based on their drive and skill level, and to ensure a fun experience for all families involved.

The Head Coach is responsible for supervising, instructing, motivating and coaching approximately 125 swimmers ages 4-18. S/he develops workouts, directs practice, and manages swimmer placement for all meets while encouraging proper sportsmanship and good teammate behavior at all times. S/he is a motivator who knows how to get kids excited about the sport of swimming, and has strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with swimmers of all ages and their parents.

The coach will become familiar with the rules and regulations (as found in the Swim Team Handbook and the CAL agreement) and actively participate in ensuring these are followed and promoted. The coach will leverage time trials on a regular basis to inform meet lineups, to measure swimmer progress and promote healthy competition on the team

Essential Functions and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned): 

  • Maintains vigilance while conducting practice in order to maintain constant control of the group and emphasize safety at all times                                                                                                                                                         
  • Conducts effective and progressive swim practices 
  • Arrives to work at least 10 minutes before start of practice 
  • Is visible on the pool deck and accessible to answer swim team related questions 
  • Has equipment ready before practice and cleans up after 
  • Greets participants as they arrive 
  • Communicates with participants and/or parents regarding progress 
  • Performs administrative functions using TeamUnify (app and online) and for meet entries
  • Manage and supervise assistant coaches
  • Handle all Coaching related issues
  • Works in unison with Board and its officers for all matters that pertain to the Team
  • Ensures assigned practices are covered prior to taking leave 



  • Minimum age of 20
  • Preferred experience coaching both competitive and recreational swimmers in similar program
  • Proficient in all swim skills and able to teach all stroke techniques
  • Able to lift and move equipment, and to lift an average size child
  • Valid American Red Cross Lifeguard or Water Safety certification with up to date CPR/AED/First Aid


Salary : $18-20/hr; commensurate with experience


Hours: Seasonal position May 21-July 27 that averages approximately 12 hours per week Pre-Season and 18-20 hours per week Regular Season including practice, meets, events, planning time and administrative planning for meets (i.e. lineups)

May 21– June 15 Pre-Season Practices 4-6:30pm (M-TH)

June 18 – July 25 Regular Season Morning Practices 8:00-10:30am (M-F)

                                 Regular Season Evening Practices 5:30-6:30pm (M,W,TH)

In addition to the practices, the coach is expected to attend 6 competitive swim meets (held one Saturday morning and five Tuesday evenings) and 2-3 team events.
