Buddy Baseball Program Registration is Open!
by posted 02/13/2018

This year Chatham Baseball will begin our third year of the Buddy Baseball program. Opening Day will be April 14th, 2018.

About Buddy Ball

The Bambino Buddy-Ball Division was established by Babe Ruth baseball for players ages 5-19 who are either physically and/or mentally challenged.  Buddy Ball allows challenged or special needs athletes to develop confidence and positive self-esteem.  It allows them to be part of organized sports and assists with physical fitness as well as their social skills.

Buddy Ball is designed to give everyone a chance to play baseball and have fun.  This division makes allowance for a “buddy” to help the player swing a bat, round the bases, catch a ball, etc.

Game Details

All Buddy Ball games will be held on Saturday's at 5pm at Lum Field for 1 hour.  Sessions will include a 30 minute practice followed by a 30 minute game.  The season will end on Saturday, June 16th.

"Buddies" will primarily consist of high school-aged baseball players and will be coordinated through the Chatham High School Sports Buddies Club.  If you are interested in becoming a buddy, please contact Nick Saluzzi at

Chatham Baseball is seeking Managers, Coaches and other volunteers who may be interested in assisting the League in staging the Buddy Ball Division.  Please indicate if you are willing to volunteer when registering your child.

Please visit http://www.chathambaseball.com and click the "Online Registration" button.  Registration is open until March 28, 2018.

Registration fee is $50/player to cover the costs of baseball hats, shirts, end of season awards and end of season party.

New Bat Regulations *Please Read*
by posted 09/20/2017

To: Baseball Club of Chatham Parents

Please don’t harm the messenger.  The BCC would like to give everyone a heads up that new Babe Ruth and Ripken regulations will render most every bat you own non-compliant as of January 1, 2018.  The current bat your child uses will not be allowed next season.  We realize the new bat standard is not a welcome expense for the upcoming season, but it was created to make the game safer, and in order for the BCC to participate in the Babe Ruth and Ripken programs, all bats used for the 2018 season must comply with the new rule.

Beginning in 2018, Babe Ruth and Ripken (Little League, etc.) are requiring players to use only bats which carry the following logo on the handle:

Babe Ruth created a table showing how the various leagues are affected: https://www.baberuthleague.org/bat-rules.aspx

Our BCC leagues correspond to the Babe Ruth leagues as follows:

Winners and Rookies = T-Ball (bats 27” and smaller only, 28” bats fall into Cal Ripken Baseball)

A, AA, AAA and Majors = Cal Ripken Baseball

Pony = Babe Ruth Baseball 13-15

The current list of approved bats can be found here:

This site is updated as bats are approved, so be sure to check it before purchasing a new bat.

Simply put, any bat being used now (except wood bats, T-Ball bats 27” and smaller, and BBCOR .50 bats used in Pony and 13+ travel leagues) will not be able to be used in our program beginning Jan 1, 2018.

The new “USA Baseball” stamped bats are detuned compared to existing bats (meaning balls leave the USA Baseball bat at a lower velocity.)  The new bat barrels are 2-5/8 inches (big barrel) as opposed to the current 2-1/4 inch.  This extra barrel size should be better for contact especially with the younger players.  More contact means more balls in play. For our travel program players, we anticipate that each league we participate in (USABL, NPGL, SPFBL, etc.) will adopt the same bat regulations as Babe Ruth and Ripken.  Some non-Ripken or Babe Ruth tournaments may allow the old bats or a non- stamped bat and in such cases it is best to check with the tournament organizers.

The new “USA Baseball” bats are available at retailers beginning this month.  As there are no “last season” models available at discount, expect that retailers will sell all new bats at MSRP/list pricing.

For 2018, we will continue to provide game bats for our Winners and Rookies leagues.  In addition, the BCC will purchase a new “USA Baseball” bat to have at each field box or shed used by the affected leagues.  These bats can be used at games but must be returned to the box or shed after the game by the coaches.

If after reading the above info you still have questions regarding the new bats, please send us an email at and we will try to answer them.
