St Margaret Mary has partnered with Play Like a Champion Today Character Education through Sports Initiative developed by the Alliance for Catholic Education at the University of Notre Dame.
Play Like A Champion Today incorporates all the stakeholders in Catholic education - parish leadership, school administrators, athletic leadership, coaches, parents and athletes. The goal is for all members of the parish community to work together to make our athletics ministry at St Margaret Mary the spiritual and character-building experience that it is meant to be. Anyone planning to participate in our athletics ministry as a coach must attend a coach's workshop. All parents of student athletes are required to attend the parent's workshop. Students are introduced to Play Like a Champion Today principles as they participate in sports. Coaches are equipped with a simple five week curriculum to introduce G.R.O.W. approach in year 1. In year 2, the introduce the Cardinal virtues (Prudence, Temperance, Fortitude and Justice) as the relate to G.R.O.W. In year 3, they are introduced to the Theological Virtues (Faith, Hope and Love) as they relate to the Cardinal Virtues and G.R.O.W. In year 4, we begin again with G.R.O.W. If a child plays one sport they will be introduced to that year's curriculum one time. If they play multiple sports they will get multiple exposures to the curriculum.
As of July 1, 2015 it is mandatory that all SMM coachs go through the Play Like A Champion Today Coachs Workshop before coaching.
