Weston’s One World After-School Programs
 
Weston Youth Services is pleased to offer WOW! After-School programs for students in Kindergarten through Second Grade at Hurlbutt Elementary School. Please note that enrollment is limited in order to keep class size small and classes will be filled on a first-come, first -served basis
 
Registration
Online registration will open on Wednesday, September 6th at 10:01 p.m. If a program is full, you still may register and your child's name will automatically be placed on the wait-list (No payment is required at this time). If space does become available, you will be notified via email.
 
Fees:
Please see each course listing for specific fees. ALL materials are included in class fee.
Financial Aid is available; please contact Charlene Chiang-Hillman, Director of Social Services,
at 203-222-2663 if you would like to inquire about assistance.
 
Payment:
  • ALL payments must be made online; you will have the option to pay by Mastercard, Visa or E-Check online via our secure site.
  • Full payment of program fees must be made within twenty-four (24) hours of registration.  The system has been set up to automatically delete unpaid registrations after twenty-four (24) hours.   When a registration has been deleted due to non-payment, a system-generated email will be sent stating:
"This is a notification that the registration for (registrants first name and last initial) has been deleted due to non-payment on (date and time that registration was deleted).”
 
Refund:
Once a class begins, we do not issue refunds or credits.  If you cancel your child’s registration prior to the start of a program, you will be charged a $25.00 administrative and processing fee.
                       
Program Dates:
Classes begin the week of September 18th and run through the week of December 4th unless otherwise noted.
 
Class Length:
All classes are scheduled from 3:15 pm – 4:15 pm unless otherwise noted.  Please check individual programs for descriptions, grade eligibility, room assignments, start dates, and program end times.

Important information:
  1. Alternate dismissal notes must be sent, in duplicate, every week to your child’s teacher.  Please make a notation on your alternate dismissal notice if anyone, other than yourself is picking up your child at dismissal.  Additionally, given our unpredictable Weston weather, please indicate what your child’s dismissal plans are in the event of an unplanned after school activities cancelation.
  2. In the event of an early dismissal due to inclement weather or any other school emergency, all after-school programs will be canceled and the children will be sent home per school policy. In the event of a cancelation, we will send a reminder via email and also post this information on the Weston Youth Services website. If we are unable to contact you in the case of a last minute cancelation by an instructor, children will stay in the main office with the WOW! Supervisor until a parent arrives.  We will make every effort to make up missed classes due to cancelations.
  3. There is no nurse on duty after normal school hours. In the event of illness or emergency treatment, we will call 911 and then contact parents, or the emergency contact if necessary. If your child has any special medical needs, please contact Charlene Monn prior to the start of the session.
  4. Weston Youth Services reserves the right to cancel a class due to lack of student enrollment.
  5. If a student is dismissed for disciplinary reasons or withdraws from the school or the program, the parent forfeits the entire program fee.

Monday Programs
11-week session

We are very excited to welcome Zaniac – Westport this fall to the WOW! after school programs with their Tinkering – Introduction to Circuits program. Tinkering provides a powerful way to inspire students’ interest, engagement, and understanding in the many applications of real world technology.  Learn by working through electrical engineering projects that use accessible cutting edge hardware and teach 21st century skills.  Zaniac’s instructors focus on learning through hands-on-prototyping putting the power of electronics in the hands of every student.

We are thrilled to add Game Gala to our WOW! Fall line up!  Designed to offer students an enriching and positive time in a social environment, each class begins with group instruction of a selected game and is followed by supervised "free play." Game choices include classics, such Checkers, Bingo, Scrabble Jr., Guess Who, Uno, and other card games and group activities. If you love playing games, this gala is for you! “It’s the greatest game in town!”

We’re excited to have Catherine Revzon join our WOW! after school programs! Catherine is a mother of a fourth and seventh grader, pharmacist, and educator. She enjoys playing board games with her children and always carries a travel sized game in her car. 
 
Paint Draw & More!  (K thru 2nd grade)

Paint Draw & More! is proud of its 20+ successful years as pioneers in children’s art instruction. Paint, Draw & More! allows children to express their creativity, while learning technical skills, and helps to build self-esteem through artistic accomplishments. Drawing fundamentals like shape, contour, design, color and medium are progressively used every week so your child can create new and varied works of art. Our classes are fun, engaging and each project is developed with your child in mind. Whether your child continues in the arts or chooses another path, this creative development will enhance their intellectual growth and understanding of math, history and the sciences. Note:  If your child cannot attend the Monday program, we also offer a Friday class!
 
Instructor:
Steve Burke has always been interested in the mechanics of how things work. He was a machinist at a small R+D firm where he worked with a variety of materials. Soon after, he began a home construction company specializing in design, restoration, additions and cabinetry. Using his expertise in design, mechanics, machining, and woodworking, helps broaden students’ perspective and better understand how things work.  .
 
 
Tuesday Programs

Creative Paper Crafts with Meg Murphy (K thru 2nd grade)

Ever make anything with paper pulp? The creative process of making hand-made paper has been around for centuries. Students will have so much fun learning how to make paper pulp and turn it into imaginative works of art that include card making, plates, bowls, art paper, and more!  A sure enjoyment for your art oriented child!  Note:  If your child cannot attend the Tuesday program, we also offer a Wednesday class.
 
Instructor: 
Meg Murphy, who many of our students know from clay sculpting, is pleased to offer this creative after school program.  Meg attended Silvermine School of the Arts where she studied fundamentals of design, drawing, ceramics and metal sculptures. She is also an accomplished stain glass designer as well as a landscape designer.

We’re thrilled to have Georgetown Martial Arts return to our fall WOW! programs! This NON-competitive, core-strengthening exercise is good for beginners, intermediates, and advanced students. Sensei David focuses on helping students understand and use martial arts to develop self-discipline, self-control, confidence, focus, and respect for others in a fun and safe environment.
Note:  Please specify weight and height on registration form if your child is ordering a white    
GI- uniform. (If your child already has his/her own uniform, the price of the class will be adjusted to $176.00).  Note: If your child cannot make the Tuesday class, we also offer a Wednesday and Thursday program!
Special Note:  Students may be invited to test for an advanced belt pending successful completion of learned techniques.  Parents will be notified directly by Georgetown Martial Arts.  Please know that there is an additional cost for the test, payable to Georgetown Martial Arts, and is not part of the WOW! fee.
 
Instructor: 
Sensei David Chapman is the owner of Georgetown Martial Arts. Sensei Dave began his own martial arts training at the age of 9. He studied the arts of Tang Soo Do, Uechi-Ryu in which he holds a black belt.  Mr. Chapman also holds a brown belt in Tae Kwon Do and has studied kempo karate since 1994. Sensei also earned the rank of 3nd degree black belt and holds a black sash in Black Tiger Kung-Fu.

Magic…Junior Genies Magic Club (K thru 2nd grade)

Magic Show on December 5th    
 
We promise we won’t teach students how to make their younger siblings disappear—that wouldn’t be right!—but we will teach tools used by professional magicians. Each week students will receive tricks and materials to take home. Students will build self-confidence and poise, develop stage presence, and  improve presentation, public speaking, and leadership skills.  Note: Any students repeating this class will receive new tricks and will help as magic assistants for new students.  Note:  If your child cannot attend the Tuesday program, we also offer a Friday class!
 
Instructor:
Nisan Eventoff is an internationally known magician who has appeared in movies, T.V. and theatre.  He is a life member of the prestigious “Magic Castle” in Los Angeles.

 
 
Wednesday Programs
11-week session
September 20th – December 6th (no class Nov. 22nd)  
 
Stop Motion Experience (2nd grade)
Minimum # of participants:    7 students
Maximum # of participants:  10 students

A full 360° immersion into the world of stop motion filmmaking awaits you in this 8-week after school program! Students work in groups rotating through filming stations around the room collaborating as an entire class on videos using four different styles of stop motion animation. Work with a variety of styles including time-lapse animation, action scene animation, and live action animation!

We are excited to welcome back the Chess Club of Fairfield County! This course for beginners builds logical and critical thinking, helps develop patience and concentration, and informs students about the history and evolution of chess strategy. Students will learn the basics of the game of chess, including but not limited to board set up, the value of pieces, elementary tactics, and endgame strategy.

The Chess Club of Fairfield County offers educational and recreational services for all players from beginners to grandmasters with a common element of an uncompromising dedication to elevating chess.

Making Music with Ms. Cardamone (1st & 2nd grade)

Now offered on Wednesdays, Making Music enables children to explore their passion and love for singing and creating music! Students will learn about different styles of music, how to sing expressively, and even how to create their own songs. We will explore how to sing as a group as well as alone, and may even have a chance to use instruments. Making music will encourage students to think creatively, work collaboratively with others, and have fun while doing it!
 
Instructor: 
Jessica Cardamone is the music teacher at Hurlbutt Elementary School. While she enjoys singing and playing games in class, she is very excited to share her love of making music in other ways and styles, such as with her saxophone or ukulele!
 
 
Thursday Programs
10-week session

Let your imagination run wild with tens of thousands of LEGO®! Build engineer-designed projects such as
fire trucks, space stations, tugboats, and the Eiffel Tower .  Design and build as never before and explore your craziest and endless creative possibilities of the LEGO building system with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well instructor in this 1 ½ hour program that ends at 4:45 p.m.  Note:  Projects will not go home with students!

Come join Judy Orr as she encourages children to explore and discover the mind and body connection in a fun-filled way! Judy takes a creative approach to yoga that can be very helpful for children whose bodies are still developing. The use of animated poses and basic stretching exercises promote strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness. Breathing and visualization techniques teach children how to focus, relax and develop self-control.
Note:  Students should bring their own yoga mat each week to class.
 
Instructor:
Judy is currently a 500Hr Yoga Alliance registered yoga teacher specializing in Yin, Gentle, Power Vinyasa Flow, Y12SR for Addiction and Thai Yoga Bodywork.  Her approach to kids yoga is to “play” yoga with children by integrating storytelling, games, and music that foster a loving environment for movement, concentration, and relaxation.
 
Around the World in 8 Weeks! (1st & 2nd grade)
Maximum # of participants:  8 students

Note:  This is an 8-week program and ends on November 16th
 
Give your child the opportunity to discover the world! Students will experience the traditional language, costumes, animals, and cuisine of eight different countries across the globe. This course is specifically designed to offer students a chance to see the world through the eyes of another culture and strengthen their knowledge of cultural diversity. With a lesson plan that combines facts and fun and a plethora of hands-on activities, children will be totally engaged.
 
Instructor:
Sylvie Lobsenz is a dynamic and caring teacher with a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from the Ecole Sante Sociale in Lyon.  She is also the founder and language coordinator of Literakid Language Programs. Madame Sylvie has been teaching French and Spanish to children and adults for 13 years.

Friday Programs
10-week session

This action packed STEM focused program is bubbling over with classic experiments and crazy concoctions! Have bubbling, billowing, ice-cold fun when you explore the changing states of matter.  Perform spectacular hands-on activities using real laboratory tools.  Witness superb demonstrations and probe the properties of light with some spectacular glow-in-the-dark technology.  Learn and apply concepts and techniques just like a real chemist.  Take home items are included with each class.

Instructor:
With a degree in molecular and cell biology, Anastasia Gussen is also trained in all traditional types of media; pen and ink, pencil, charcoal, paint and photography. She has participated in invitation only life drawing classes and has completed a graphic design program at Pratt Institute.
