Ad Hoc Tournament Info

The following information is about the National Indoor Tournament (NITs) and National Indoor Tournament Qualifiers (NITQs). These are ad hoc tournaments and not included in the regular season price.  Coaches will hold tryouts for every age group after the season starts to staff the squads from players interested in attending.  Players who play up an age group for regular season play are eligible to try out for the NIT and/or NITQ squads for all U groups covered by their birth year, i.e., a U12 playing for U14 squad is eligible to try out for both the U12 and the U14 NIT squad.

What is the National Indoor Tournament?

  • NITs is a 3 day Stay To Play Tournament that is a one of a kind event that brings the best teams in the country together to compete.  Many college coaches from D1, D2 & D3 attend the U16 & U19 NITs as a recruiting tool. (USA Field Hockey requires all players to book a 2 night minimum stay using their travel partner for the event (Nook Housing for U10s-U16s and Global JBS for U19s).
  • USA FH limits roster size for NITs to 12 players including goalies.
  • NIT is comprised of multiple pools at each age group.  Each pool is different and stands alone.  It is not possible for clubs to know which pools are "easier" than others.  USA FH selects all pools.  Clubs and coaches have no influence on how USA FH seeds pools.
  • All clubs may register 1 U10, 1 U12 & 1 U14 team when registration opens in September for NITs.  Clubs can enter multiple teams at this age group but only the 1st team in each age group is guaranteed.  If multiple teams in an age group are registered, teams will not be balanced for skill.  NITs is a very competitive national tournament.
    • We assess this interest during tryouts and will register as many teams for these age groups as the numbers dictates.  USA FH registration is open for a short window in late Sep.
    • Any club who enters a team in a USA FH event and does not show is sanctioned in that age group for the event for one full year.
    • USA FH does not allow players to play for multiple NIT squads within the same age group, i.e., a player who is U12 may play on a U12 team and a U14 team at NITs but may not play for 2 U12 teams or 2 U14 teams at NITs.
  • U16 and U19 team pools are currently based on what number the team finished at the Qualifier, i.e., all 1st place teams at Qualifiers are seeded in pools with other 1st place teams, etc.
    • U10 & U12 NITs are held at Spooky Nook the weekend of Feb 22nd with play Fri, Sat & Sun.
    • U14 NITs are held at Spooky Nook the weekend of Feb 15th with play either Fri, Sat & Sun or Sat, Sun & Mon.  USA FH chooses.
    • U16 NITs are held at Spooky Nook weekend of Mar 1st with play Fri, Sat & Sun.  U19 NITs are weekend of Feb 22nd in Richmond with play Fri, Sat, Sun.
  • Cost for this tournament is extra.  Approximate cost will be $255 depending on number of players attending and does not include player's travel expenses.

What are National Indoor Tournament Qualifiers (NITQs)?

  • U16s & U19s squads who want to attend NITs must qualify to attend NITs.
  • USA FH holds Qualifiers in different places on different dates. Clubs must pick a 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.  USA FH selects your location based on those choices. Our club select locations in either PA or VA. The Qualifer is a one day tournament.
  • Qualifying is hard!  It is normally only the top 4 teams at each Qualifier who attend NITs.
  • Cost for the Qualifier is approximately $134 (based on number of players attending) and does not include player's travel expenses.  Qualifiers are not Stay To Play.
  • Clubs may register as many teams as they have interested.  We will not take squads with less than 9 players including a goalie.  USA FH sets maximum roster at 12 players including goalies. Qualifier registration opens in late Sep for a short window
  • The club decides how many teams to register for qualifiers in each age group based on interest, commitment and player skill level.  Qualifiers are very competitive!
  • We will register as many squads as we have interest and skill.
  • Coaches will select Qualifier teams once the season starts so that all players have an opportunity to be seen by age group at the same time.  Players must agree if chosen they will attend the Qualifier and that if their squad qualifies they will attend NITs.  Any club who registers for a USA FH event and/or qualifies and does not accept is sanctioned by USA FH and is prevented from attending the same event in that age group for 1 full year.
  • Selections are based on player skill and work ethic only. Selections are not based on length of time as a Rapid or her current year in high school.
  • If multiple Qualifier teams are registered, teams will not be evenly balanced for strength.
  • Coaches will select the strongest team possible using their professional judgement for both U16 & U19 in order to maximize qualifying opportunity
  • Each Qualifier is different and stands alone.  It is not possible for clubs to know which Qualifiers are "easier" than others.
  • Many clubs around the country send multiple teams to Qualifiers.
  • USA FH does not allow any player to play for multiple squads within the same age group.
  • Players may play up one U group.
  • U16 players may be selected to participate in both a U16 & a U19 Qualifier based on individual interest and coach selection, ex: a U16 on the strongest U16 Qualifier squad may also be selected for the strongest U19 Qualifier squad.

Squad Selections & Size

How do coaches select squads?

  • In age groups with multiple teams, squads will be staffed by skill, i.e., if an age group has 2 squads, there will be an A and a B squad, if an age group has 3 squads, there will be a A, B and C squad.
  • Coaches will decide if squad will be 8, 9 or 10 players.
  • All competitive teams have access to the same resources as others, for ex: qualified coach, practices & tournaments.  Our coaches work very collaboratively together.
  • Any Premiere Academy teams have access to the same resources as the others, for ex: qualified coach, practices & tournaments. Our coaches work very collaboratively together.

What is the timeline for squad selections and player response?

  • Coaches send squad selections to Rapids Commissioner within 2 days after tryouts.
  • Players will be notified of squad invitation within 3 days from tryout.
  • Our assumption is that players are attending tryouts because they want to make a team.
  • Please be ready to accept your invitation and register for the season within 2 days of being selected.
  • Occasionally, a player decides not to play.  If a player does not accept their spot, a coach may decide to ask someone from a different squad to join that squad.

How many players per squad?

  • Competitive squads typically have no more than 10 field players and up to 2 goalies
  • Premiere Academy squads typically have no more than 12 players and up to 2 goalies

Refunds

How are refund requests handled? We understand that sometimes things happen beyond someone’s control.

  • The club uses League Athletics as its registration system.  League Athletics is currently partnering with AIG to offer Regsaver insurance.  The cost is 7% of the registration fee.  It must be selected as part of the initial registration.  We encourage families who believe there could be an issue to purchase this insurance.  Details regarding the insurance and what it covers are available during squad registration.
  • The club allows a full refund minus $25 administrative costs for 3 days after registering.
  • The club prices squads for an average of 10 players.  If a coach believes a squad can operate successfully with less than 10 qualified players, we will at times do so.  We are not able to provide refunds for squads with more than 10 and nor do we charge additional for players with less than 10.
  • We are not able to provide refunds beyond 3 days.  The club incurs costs once players register to play to prepare for a season’s operational expenses including but not limited to renting facilities, hiring coaches, purchasing equipment, insurance and supplies.  Once a player accepts a spot, we begin committing to resources and making purchases. Facilities which is one of the largest expenses in a season (other than paying coaches) must be paid for months in advance of use. Club travel teams participate in competitive play.  Players cannot be replaced without potentially changing the skill composition of the team.

Uniforms

Rapids has been using the same uniform since 2017.  Uniform is fully customized with sublimated colors, player last name, graduation year and uniform number.  Uniform pieces include a home jersey, an away jersey and a skirt.  Players will need to purchase a skirt, a pair of both white and royal socks separately to be worn with the uniform.   If you purchased a uniform for any season since Spring 2017, your uniform is still good.  We bring sample uniforms to all tryouts for new players to try on.

  • Uniforms take 6 weeks from approved proof to be manufactured and another week for shipping.
  • Uniform orders are placed once for each season. Our final winter uniform order must be entered with our vendor by Oct 19th, 2018 in order to receive before the first tournament in December.
  • New players are required to order uniforms as part of their player squad registration. Cost for the uniform is $155 plus tax.
  • Returning players may purchase replacement uniforms if needed or order individual pieces for $51.66 plus tax.
  • Rapids has Spirit Wear including player jackets & fan gear once a season.  For the indoor season, the store will be open shortly after October tryouts for no more than 10 days.  Our vendor needs time to process all orders for delivery in time to be worn and enjoyed during the season and/or for holiday presents.  All Spirit Wear orders are optional. Players & families are not required to purchase anything.
  • Academy players do not have to purchase a uniform.  They may elect to purchase a game pinny with a number on it to use for the tournament.  They will also need to have royal shorts along with both royal and white socks.
