NEW YORK >> Alyssa Naeher was one of the countless wide-eyed youngsters who made their way to Giants Stadium on that magical mid-June day 16 years ago.
Naeher was an 11-year-old already bitten by the soccer bug when she sat in the stands for the first game in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Watching U.S. soccer legends Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy and Kristine Lilly score goals as the United States’ magical quest to glory began with a dominating 3-0 win over Denmark gave a soccer prodigy like Naeher an ultimate goal.
It was on that day that her dream of playing in the World Cup became a part of Naeher’s life’s ambition.
“It was definitely a passion,” Naeher said. “I played a lot of different sports. I enjoyed being really active and soccer was a huge piece of that. It is something I still remember, that was awesome. I remember going with my club team and a bunch of us 11-year-olds running around, being excited and the atmosphere at Giants Stadium was incredible. It was a really inspiring moment.”
