What is Ultimate Flag Football?
AYFL Ultimate flag is the first and only flag format in Northern Virginia that incorporates the use of helmets and shoulder pads. Like the pros’ spring training, players expand their football skills without fear of major injury as often seen in head on collisions in an unprotected flag environment. AYFL Ultimate Flag is the most advanced flag football experience, spring league in Northern Virginia. (No weight restrictions for ball carriers.)
How is Ultimate Flag Football different from Traditional Flag Football?
Ultimate Flag Football gets players use to limited contact that underlies many of the physical aspects of tackle football. Players develop traditional football skills that cannot be achieved in a traditional flag format such as:

Is there tackling in Ultimate Flag?
There is no tackling in Ultimate Flag. However there is a Contact Zone (up to 5 yds beyond the line of scrimmage) where players are permitted to use open hand, above the waist blocking techniques; stiff arms and various defensive line techniques to protect or get to the ball carrier.
How much is the registration fee?
For the Spring 2017 session the registration fee is $199. That includes equipment rental, and use of jersey. After February 1, 2017, the registration fee increases to $249
When does the Ultimate Flag 2017 Season begin?
The season begins March 13, 2017. The first regular season games are on April 1, 2017.
What times are the games played?
For the 2017 season, the games will be played on Saturday’s or Sunday’s between 11AM and 4PM
When are practices?
Practices will run twice per week (weekday evenings), with games on Saturday's or Sunday’s. Weekday practice times will be at the discretion of the coach. Typically, they will start around 5:30p - 6:00p and last approximately an hour and a half.
Where are the games played?
Games will be held on fields allocated by Loudoun County. Typically, this is in the Ashburn, VA area.

Do I have to buy my own equipment?
No. The registration fee includes use of league issued shoulder pads and helmet. However, some parents choose to purchase their own through AYFL affiliates.
What levels (age groups) are offered?
Players registered for Ultimate Flag will be placed per our current fall grade brackets
A League – 7th and 8th Grade
B League – 5th and 6th Grade
C League – 3rd and 4th Grade
D League – 1st and 2nd Grade
Players are welcome to play "up", but cannot play "down." (a 7th grader must play in A league for example, not play down in B.)
How are teams selected?
For B, C and D league, teams will be randomly assigned to coaches. Coaches may “freeze” a maximum of (4) players. For A league, teams will be assigned by Middle School. New coaches may field an entire team of players, if those players have not previously participated in Ultimate Flag.
What if my player does not attend a local Ashburn Middle School?
If your player does not attend a local Ashburn Middle School, then they will be randomly assigned to a team.
Can I request that my player be on a specific team?
AYFL does not guarantee player placement requests.
How are coaches selected?
Many factors are considered when selecting coaches such as experience, tenure with the league, etc. Many of our coaches have played at the highest of levels including college and the NFL. Parents interested in coaching are also encouraged to apply.
Are there any pre-season evaluations?
AYFL will not conduct any pre-season player evaluations. One of our goals is to have parity among the teams. They will be balanced as much as possible. If your player is not currently registered in AYFL's tackle program he/she will be placed based on experience.
Is prior football experience required?
No former tackle-football experience is required. We consider it an advanced flag format. However, the format provides a great transition, for players that believe they would like to try tackle in the fall.
