The founders of WYSC created the league as a place where children of all ages and abilities could learn about the sport of basketball while having fun. The emphasis is on learning, teamwork and sportsmanship, not on the final score or the division standings. The league is run almost entirely by volunteers, but coaches and referees receive training before they step on the court.

In case of bad weather, a decision will be made about game or practice cancelations in the morning and posted on the WYSC home page.  If schools are closed then all practices and games are canceled.  Canceled practices will not be re-scheduled.  See our Closings/Cancelations tab on the Basketball page since some schools remain open for practices on TWD's and some do not. This decision is made by the principals at each school and our Closings/Cancelations page details each school's policy.

The recreational basketball fee is found on the Basketball home page located "here".

All players (age 7 and up) will go through an evaluation process where they will be scored on several skills in basketball drills. Coaches' kids WILL need to go through evaluations.  Any player that does not attend the evaluations will not be placed on a team.

All players will be then placed on teams by the basketball coordinator randomly based on:
  1. Scores from Evaluation
  2. Position suggested by evaluators
  3. Age
  4. Height
  5. Practice location desired

Players are not allowed to request coaches this season, practice days, or ride requests with friends. Siblings in the same divisions will be placed together on teams.

Practice location choices are not guaranteed.

  • North players can be placed in the North or Central regions for practice
  • South players can be placed in the South or Central regions for practice
  • Central players can be placed in any region for practice

6. Who is eligible to play with WYSC?

Girls and boys, aged 4 to 18 are eligible to play. You do not have to live in Fauquier County to participate.
If you have a child that does not meet the minimun age requirement to play in a certain Basketball age bracket you may request that he or she play up a division by submitting the following form-Player Age Waiver.
Please email this form to lgarner@wysc.org AND bring it to the evaluations for the youngest age in the division you want to play in.

The 5/6 Coed division only plays/practices on Saturdays.  They will play at schools around Fauquier County with 8 foot basketball hoops, varying each week for each team. This division practices with their coach the first half of the practice time slot and then scrimmages the other team for the second half of the time slot. Coaches are encouraged to be on the court with the players to help teach proper play.

Practices are held once a week for players age 7 and up at various schools around Fauquier County. Each team gets a one hour time slot once a week to practice. Teams will share a gym with another team.

Practice location choices are not guaranteed.

  • North players can be placed in the North or Central regions for practice
  • South players can be placed in the South or Central regions for practice
  • Central players can be placed in any region for practice
Games are held on Saturdays in Jan, Feb and March at various schools around Fauquier County. Each team will have one game each weekend.
The age group your child is in is determined by the player’s age on 12/31.

Please go to the home page and click on Register Online to register to be a volunteer.
Great!!  Please see first register yourself online by going to our home page and then clicking on the basketball volunteer/coaches registration to fill out the online form.  Also, visit the Coaches page on our Basketball page of our website to review the responsibilities of coaching. Coaching is a wonderful way to give back to the club and set a good example for your children. It requires an hour or so a week for practice and another hour or so on weekends for the games.

All coaches must attend a Coach’s Clinic/Meeting which will be held prior to the beginning of the season. The clinic will cover the rules of the game and age-appropriate coaching techniques in addition to safety measures.
