Coach Bio GARY ANDERSON
Coach Anderson began coaching basketball in 1978 as a junior in High School coaching a 6th grade boys team and instantly knowing that coaching was going to be his lifelong passion. In 1982 he was hired as the C team girls basketball coach at Thompson Valley High School. Thrown into the gym with 12 High School girls he quickly felt he knew one thing for sure – he felt like he didn’t know much. Two years later he moved up to coach the JV – for two more years of losing. After 4 years of taking it on the chin he had an epiphany that would stay with him for the next 25 years – “If you play tenacious defense you can compete with teams that are more skilled.” Since that time he has tried to build his teams from the defensive end. He was extremely fortunate to be coaching with a great mentor at TVHS, Barry Olson, whose leadership would guide the team to winning 3 out of 4 State Championships. In 1992 Coach Anderson was hired as Head Coach at Green Mountain High School. In 1998 he moved over to be the Head Coach at Arvada West High School. He has also been a Head Football Coach. In 2007 he moved to the boy’s game as JV coach at Chatfield High School and was fortunate again to be working with one of the top coaches in Colorado, Steve Schimpeler, from whom he has learned more about hoops than he could’ve imagined! Coach Anderson has some awesome young people and feels so fortunate to have a career that he thoroughly enjoys. He has been married to his wife Yvonne for 22 years and they still like each other!
