Yale Youth Hockey Association
Philosophy

Our goal is to develop great skaters who can become great hockey players and/or to develop each player’s skating skills and hockey skills to their maximum potential.

We concentrate on baseline skating technique, believing  we will develop great skaters who can then become great hockey players due to their superior skating capabilities.

We are advocates of and incorporate the USA Hockey ADM "American Development Model" into our youth hockey development model.

We stress the importance and value of team play.

Skills Sessions:

Skills Sessions "Power Skating" for Skaters, under the direction of Shaun Hanna are an important component of the Yale Youth Hockey culture and program, therefore there is no additional cost. Skills Sessions are held ~1 evening per week, October through February and all Yale Youth Hockey Players are eligible and expected to attend.

Skills Sessions "Skills and Drills" for Goalies, under the direction of Jared Waimon - Pro Crease are an important component of the Yale Youth Hockey culture and program, therefore there is no additional coast. Skills Sessions are held ~1 evening per week, October through February and all Yale Youth Hockey Players are eligible and expected to attend.

Sportsmanship:
We mandate “good sportsmanship” from the players, coaches, and parents as well as others representing Yale Youth Hockey.

Beliefs:
We recognize children today live very busy lives. We encourage and foster commitment to schoolwork and school activities. Good students become smart hockey players and good citizens.

We encourage participation in other sports believing this develops important crossover skills, provides our children with intellectual, social and athletic balance, and a sustainable love of hockey for many, many years.

Yale Youth Hockey allows our children, parents and families to integrate into the Yale community and experience Yale’s history and culture.

Season:
Our Season is expected to begin in very early September and extend to the end of February. In recent years, CHC Tournaments and Outside Tournaments have extended into mid or late March. Ice Slot availability in February becomes more challenging and March is very unpredictable.

Our Season - September through February/March is 26-30 Weeks.

Practices (Travel Teams):
We anticipate providing 2 Practice Ice Slots per week averaged over the Season. It is not logistically possible to guarantee 2 Practice Ice Slots per week each week, although 2 is our objective. Ice slot availability at every program and every rink is a moving target, unforeseen ice slot cancelations are common and weather related issues are uncontrollable.

Games (Travel Teams):
We anticipate providing 16 to 18 Home Game Ice Slots primarily at Ingalls Rink - Yale University. Some Home Game Ice Slots will be scheduled at outside rinks.

Scheduling Games Away is the responsibility of the Team Manager and/or Head Coach. We expect at least as many Away Games to be scheduled as Home Game Ice Slots allocated.

Tournaments (Travel Teams):
Yale Youth Hockey Association funds the CHC and CGHL State Championship Tournaments, as well as one other tournament provided a team has not played in a mandated Yale Youth Hockey Association Tournament.

Practices (House Limited-Travel Teams):
We anticipate providing 1-2 Practice Ice Slots per week averaged over the Season. It is not logistically possible to guarantee 1-2 Practice Ice Slots per week each week, although 1-2 is our objective. Ice slot availability at every program and every rink is a moving target, unforeseen ice slot cancelations are common and weather related issues are uncontrollable.

Games (House Limited-Travel Teams):
We anticipate providing 3 to 4 Home Game Ice Slots at Ingalls Rink-Yale University.
