Dick's Sporting Goods
DICK'S Sporting Goods was founded in 1948 when an 18-year-old Dick Stack was working at an Army surplus store in Binghamton, New York. An avid fisherman, Dick was approached by the store owner to come up with a list of products needed to get into the fishing tackle business. After Dick presented his suggestions, the owner told him he was a dumb kid and had no idea what he was doing. Dick was upset and promptly quit. He went to his grandmother's house where he spent a lot of time as a kid and told her what had happened. Dick's grandmother asked how much it would cost to build the store himself. Dick said it would cost $300. His grandmother then went to the cookie jar where she kept her life savings and gave him $300 and told him "do it yourself." Dick used that money and his relentless work ethic to open a bait-and-tackle shop in Binghamton. By 1958, he expanded his product line to include much of what you'll find at DICK'S Sporting Goods today. Ed Stack, Dick's son, is the current CEO and Chairman of DICK'S Sporting Goods. He and his siblings bought the store from their father and are responsible for taking two stores and growing the chain to over 675 stores. Dick's family continues to offer the finest quality products at competitive prices, backed by the best service anywhere. Like you, we have a real passion for sports. DICK'S Sporting Goods, Inc. is a leading omnichannel sporting goods retailer offering an extensive assortment of authentic, high-quality sports equipment, apparel, footwear and accessories. Affton Americans Hockey
Affton Athletic Association, through the hard work and dedication of volunteers, has been providing outlets for children and young adults to experience the intangible rewards of participating in team sports. In 1962, the founding volunteers incorporated as the Affton Khoury League Association, Inc. and teams began playing baseball on the current fields off of Gravois Road. In 1972, the Affton Khoury League provided the land for a new outdoor ice rink on what was originally baseball’s Field #1. The rink was erected with the efforts of numerous volunteers, as well as Noel Piccard of the newly formed St. Louis Blues. Much of the building materials and labor were donated by local businesses and labor unions. A few years later the rink was enclosed and the original ice-making equipment is still in use. With the addition of hockey, the organization began operating under its current name, Affton Athletic Association. Today, Affton Athletic Association remains an independent 501(c)3 charitable organization serving the local community. The Affton Americans Hockey organization provides opportunities for kids of all ages and skill levels, from our Learn-To-Play program with kids as young as 4 to our St. Louis Junior Blues program for young men up to 20 years old. Additionally, we provide ice time for hockey programs in St. Louis City and County and Southern Illinois, including local high schools such as Lindbergh, CBC, SLUH, and Vianney; other youth hockey clubs; and college hockey organizations. Affton hosts a variety of tournaments throughout the hockey season that draw teams not only from around the St. Louis area but across the country. During the regular season we have about 650 athletes playing hockey on 40 house and travel teams and our spring hockey programs serve more than 500 players.

Happy Joe's Pizza & Ice Cream
Fortel's Pizza Den
In April of 1966, Bob Fortel began his career in the restaurant business. He worked at “The Pizza Den” just down the street from his house at Mackenzie and Heege. He worked there through high school and college, then he decided to explore other options in food services. He continued working for other people until 1981, when he met his goal. On January 1, 1981, Bob bought the store at Mackenzie and Heege and named it “Fortel’s Pizza Den”. It was a rough beginning, Bob and Jan Fortel kept their day jobs and ran the Affton, MO pizza restaurant at night. Their daughters, Shelly and Shannon, both too young to work, spent their time playing in and around the restaurant. At bedtime the girls went to the storage room where they had sleeping bags on the floor. To make things even tougher, they had a 40 minute commute from their home in St. Charles. At age ten, Shelly began working, rolling dough every Friday night. Shannon joined her two years later. People always laughed at the two little dough girls, covered head to toe in flour. In 1987, the family finally moved from St. Charles to Affton….just two minutes from the restaurant. The entire family began working a lot more hours because they were so close and business was booming. Then, in June 1988, Bob had a heart attack. Jan and the girls took control and ran the restaurant while Bob recovered. It was a difficult summer, but one that shaped the future. 1993 brought big changes as the restaurant underwent major remodeling and expansion. Having previously relied on carry out and delivery orders alone, the location doubled its square footage and added an 80 seat dining room. In 1995, Shelly received her BS degree from Mizzou in Hotel/Restaurant Management and made the decision to return to St. Louis to work with Bob. It was during 1997 that business really got crazy. Shannon Graduated from Barnes College of Nursing with her BSN in January. Bob and Shelly were working side by side and launched into radio advertising. The response was so overwhelming that in 1998 the family recorded its first TV commercial. Late in 1998, Shannon decided to pursue nursing full-time and left the family business, but not for long. In August 1999, the first Fortel’s franchise opened in Kirkwood, Missouri. Due to the tremendous success in Kirkwood, the family continued to expand the business. We opened as far west as O’Fallon, MO, and further south than Affton to Arnold. At this time, Shannon had her first child and decided she needed more flexible hours and more time with the family, and Bob was in need of her help as the expansion continued. We went north to Florissant and Bridgeton and then, to Ballwin and Eureka. On January 21, 2003, the Fortel family suffered a tremendous blow with the loss of Bob to a massive heart attack. But, the family felt we had to continue Bob’s dream. On May 13, 2003, we opened our new store in Affton, across the parking lot from the old location, with all new plumbing, electric, and a huge outdoor patio in what is now known as Fortel’s Plaza. In December of 2003, we expanded to the Metro East and opened a location in Fairview Heights, Illinois. Since 2006, we have added a store in Creve Coeur. There is now a third generation of Fortel’s. Bob has four beautiful grandchildren. Hopefully, as they grow old enough, they will carry on Bob’s dream and the ‘best pizza’ in St. Louis for many years to come.
